NOW IN PAPERBACK AND DIGITAL PDF
Hatch's
Interior Plants (HIP) has been updated and expanded. It is now being
printed as Houseplant Cultivars (HPC). As many of you requested, the
content is becoming available in ebook, paperback, and
hardback
editions for use in
libraries and locations where print versions are more effective. As
many of you know, new cultivar names are not nomenclaturally valid
until
in distributed print form, meaning digital files cannot be cited and
are ignored by some experts. It is essential that many names be
validated with print formats and we intend to do this is an ambitious
and professional manner. To give a nomenclature standard and be a
source of authority these changes were necessary. This is not a cheap
nor easy adventure but one that the industry, collectors, and
horticulture in general both deserves and demands.

us at ornamentals@lycos.com with "Houseplant Cultivars" in the subject
line. We have over 40 products so it's important to specify this series vs.
"your book".
New Houseplant Cultivar Registration: 1.
You must have originated (found, discovered, bred) the plant to
register it or have permission to market and name it from the
originator. If the originator is unknown and you've made every
effort
to find their person or organization, we will provisionally register
the plants, assuming no patent searches or valid documentation finds
the true
owner. We cannot register new wild species because there is
already an approved botanical, academic process for naming true wild
species and subspecies. 2. The cultivar does not have to be strictly "new" but can be a
clarification of existing nomenclature with confused clones or just
something missing from tradtional houseplant guides. If it needs to be
defined, redefined, or clarified for the trade, it's part of this
project. 3.
The new cultivar must be available commercially by a least one source
in the world (website, auction site, nursery, botanic garden). Your
ebay and Etsy store count. We will not register a new sport that is not
yet propagated, commercially sold, or for "general interest" as one
well-meaning person told us. Cultivars names are for the trade, for
commerce, and not to catalog our personal, private collections and
unique sports. Please give those accession numbers until they merit
being sold. Please include a link to a source so we may include it.
Unlike some ICRA or academic registers we actually want people to find
and buy your plant and do not have a ban on commercial references. This
is free promtion to thousands of eager plant collectors and industry
leaders. 4. We do not register Begonia, Saintpaulia and other gesneriads,
Bromeliads, carnivorous plants, waterlilies, Tradescantia,
Fuchsia, Hibiscus, orchids, and any non-ornamental plants as
there are existing registrars who ably handle those cultivars. We will
help you reach them if you need a link or two. 5. You must include
a full description of the plant with measurements of height/width, leaves, flowers,
and colors when possible. Include history and origination data. A link
to a retail or wholesale nursery source is welcome as are any
informational pages on the web. 6. Email to ornamentals@lycos.com with "OROC" in the subject line.
Please include a JPG image if you can and any copyright terms you wish
us to include for that image. If you wish to donate the image to this project, please
note that as well. 7.
We will contact you back with your registration information, estimated
date of publication, and any additional information that is required. 8.
There is no charge for this service and we will fully publish your cultivar name
in a manner that makes it valid under the nomenclatrual code.
Initially registrations may appear in digital format here on this or
related pages. 9.
This registration (nor any other cultivar registration) provides no
(zero) legal rights such as patent protection, plant breeders
rights, or
registered trademark of names. Those are separate processes operated
only by
governmental agencies. This process of printed publication does make
your name nomenclaturally valid and established as would peer-reviewed,
academic literature. Your cultivar registration may include an
unregistered trademark (no legal stuff required) such as Plantus
communis 'Smithpink' PINK QUEEN™ but will only publish a registered
trademark if you provide documentation from your country's trademark
authority that the name has been registered and is active. 10.
Our cultivar registration is under the
auspices of the Open Registration Of Cultivars (OROC) project and under
their rules. OROC since 2017 has
documented more than 400 new woody plants, 300 perennials, and
over 50 interior, tropical plants. OROC is a consortium of
experts
worldwide devoted to making up for the lack of cultivar registration by
the other
ICRA processes. No one was doing it or doing it right (except for a
few genera and families named above) so OROC decided to fund it and
make it happen. 11. Thank you for helping make houseplant nomenclature standardized worldwide and more stable!
HOUSEPLANT CULTIVARS has already registered with OROC and described the following new cultivars: Descriptions are found in the main volumes of the series. Newest registrations appear in red at the bottom of this list.
