Born to parents that were dirt poor and could not afford to keep him, he was placed in an orphanage. Growing up in an orphanage was not easy so he always dreamed about being free. He could not think of a more free place than outer space. At the age of 15, he obtained a pilots license and graduated the top of his high school class.

After High school he was nominated to the U. S. Naval Academy which he excelled in all his courses. After graduation from the Academy he served on board the U S S John F. Kennedy during Desert Storm.

He was about to reenlist in the Navy at the end of his first hitch, but NASA approached him to recruit him for the Shuttle pilot program. Always wanting to reach higher he turned in his wings and became the youngest man to join the NASA Shuttle program.

While working at NASA he married Mitzi O'Shay, and they had one child together, a daughter named Lydia.

Although he went up in several shuttles he was not the pilot on any of them, to many men were his senior. That changed in the year 2000. He was going to the pilot aboard the new space craft for NASA, called the USS Challenger A. The Challenger was not any other shuttle, for it did not launch from a pad, but from a run way like a plane.

The USS Challenger A launched on September 1, 2000 at 0800. The launch from the earth went as planned, but as soon as the shuttle cleared the atmosphere it disappeared. The USS Challenger A was thought to have exploded and was deemed a failure.

2368- Beta Quadrant- The USS Enterprise- E commanded by Jean Luc Picard investigates a new formed Wormhole. As the Enterprise reaches the co-ordinates of the Wormhole it opens for 30 seconds and disappears from sensors. In its disappearance it leaves behind an old earth shuttle. As the crew of the Enterprise E investigates they discover it is the USS Challenger A of the United States of America. Captain Picard thinking that it belongs in a museum orders it to be brought aboard for transport. The Challenger is stored in Shuttlebay 2 and the crew starts its investigation.

As the away team enter the old shuttle they soon discover that the crew is still on board frozen. All of the crew are dead save one Lt. Commander Jim Mace, the pilot of the ill fated vessel. He is transported to sic bay where Dr Beverly Crusher is able to bring him out of suspended animation. Jim Mace might have survived suspended animation, but his long sleep cost him his eyes. Dr. Crusher operated on his eyes giving him prosthetic eyes. His prosthetic eyes gives him the ability to see at great distances and see in infrared as well at other spectrums, as well as seeing in the dark. Dr. Crusher put Lt. Commander Jim Mace in the care of Counsellor Troi and Lt. Commander Jordi LaForge (who also has prosthetic eyes)

After being on board the USS Enterprise for a year Jim Mace returns to Earth hailed as a hero. He request to be allowed to attend Starfleet Academy, which is granted. He again graduates the top of his class as a pilot.
He is assigned to Starbase 10 where he is both a Runabout pilot and Shuttle pilot.

Joining the Highlander in 2374, Mace signed as the Chief Shuttle Pilot, however his talents were soon put to a better use, when he became the Ships Chief Operations Officer. Mace continued his distinguished career on board the Highlander, until late in 2376, he was attacked by the resident Borg and badly wounded. Without the equipment needed for his continuing treatment, Lt.Jg Mace was transferred back to Starbase 375 where he could recieve continueous medical care.

Lt Mace returned to The USS Highlander on Stardate 50611.14 to take on the position of Chief of Conn.

Personality profile: Jim Mace is friendly, but some what of a loner. He sometimes feels out of place while interacting with others. The age difference of him being 403 years old while most those around him are still in the double digit age does get to him sometimes. That is why he like flying shuttles and runabouts, he gets away from people and see the place he loves, space. He still interacts, but he likes to be alone.
