Civilian - Science and Engineering HAIPS - USS HIGHLANDER |
The HAIPS system is the brain-child of Dr Sian Llewellan II, a specialist in Holographics and Artificial Inteligence. Born in 2351 to Dr Sian Llewellan I and Dr Sev Dnorkin, at age 13 Sian II was involved in an accident on Jupiter Station while his parents were working with Dr Lewis Zimmerman on what would eventually become the Emergency Medical Hologram (EMH) system that accelerated his body's rate of aging, resulting in him having the body of a 90 year old man before he had reached the age of 25.
The HAIPS system was developed for two main reasons. Firstly as an extension to the EMH system, this allowed a Hologram to have more personality and interface with the crew better, especially on very long missions (sp: Voyager). The second reason was more personal. Unless Federation medical technology advances significantly, it is beleived that Dr Llewellan will not live to see his 30th birthday. As a result Sian III has been given the personality and full memories of his creator. This is his creators way of doing a lot of the things that he is unable to do. The computer that powers the HAIPS system (and Sian III) was installed in one of the rooms in the crew quarters, along with the required technology to turn the entire room into the equivalent of a full holosuite, plus the entire ship has been fitted with holo-emmiters to allow Sian full access to the entire ship. Currently Sian is the only HAIPS system in use, however Starfleet intend to use the Highlander as an experiment, which if successful, would result the HAIPS system being used in many more Starfleet ships and installations. The rest is still to be written............... |
Sian is a light hearted and friendly young man. He has access to the complete database of all knowledge available on the Highlander, however tries his hardest not to come across as a "know-it-all", which he seems to be accomplishing. While serious about his work, he enjoys joking around, with one of his favourite ongoing jokes is walking around the ship on the ceiling, which he explains with the comment "I'm saving space!".
As a Hologram, he is not limited to being in only one place at a time, and has been known to double- or even tripple-up when required. However under normal circumstances Sian prefers to act in a more "normal" fashion, wishing to be noticed not as a Hologram, but as a person. |
