Where to share files over the Internet

All the services mentioned below provide free software that will enable you to download files from other computer users when they are online. Some offer better protection against hacker attacks than others. Access can be open to all comers or limited to the people you choose to include in your personal list. You also get Instant Messaging, which means that you can communicate directly with people whose files you are downloading, or who are downloading your files. This means you can thank them and you can also recommend files (such as music or photographs) or ask for more information about them.
Napster
The original. Free until June...Huge range, but you are expected to offer your own files to anyone with Napster.
Aimster
Like Napster, but you only share files with your own Instant Messaging partners.
Filetopia
Offers better protection of your system by using public-key cryptography.
iMesh
Claims to be more technically advanced than the others.
Songspy
Unrestricted music file sharing.
Splooge
Not just music: splooge encourages you to share business plans, PowerPoint presentations, anything.
Swapoo
File sharing software from 17 year old Jeffrey Freeman.
Toadnode
Has a very fine Flash animated diagram showing how file sharing across the Internet works.
Tripnosis
Tripnotic.
WinMX
Connected to other Napster-protocol networks.
