  1. Rising Sea Level

Everyone was concerned that we have had this situation for many years now and there has been very little done about it. The Takuu’s in POM (who are many and educated) need to take a lead in addressing the issue. Our discussion then looked at counter productive remedial solutions. We suggested various methods and structures to nullify the effects of the rising sea level:

    1. Dig a trench along the milomilo’s to reduce the impact of the waves from the South. This idea requires a backhoe or bulldozer, depending on how you want the design. With a backhoe, we have a rectangular channel of uniform depth. A bulldozer will have to allow inclined depths at the end to allow the buldozer to go in once in awhile and clear backfills. Refer to diagram below. Obviously funds will be required to engage a designer and the backhoe or buldozer.

B. Build retaining walls all around Nukutoa. This idea has the support of the majority as a good design and placement can help build up sand below it. The walls act as buffers for wave action during the odd mini tidal wave. See diagram on wall placement. A lot of cement is required, but a good design and good distance placement from the land can build up sand. Refer Ela Beach if you have been there.

C. Design artificial hatupa’s along the beach in the place of the current structure place by those along the South coast. This would mean destroying na paes and using the natural slope of the beach.

  1. We next decided to form a technical committee to oversee the project. To meet and decide on the best options, to consider other economical options as remedial solutions. Lakoa was nominated to head/coordinate this committee and all Takuus in technical professions be invited to be part of this committee. The first meeting was scheduled for Wednesday evening, 1st November.
  2. One of the facts highlighted was the need for a proper study of the situation. In the meantime, we were to try and collect pictures of the shoreline. Satellite images was suggested, obtain from US embassy or weather bureau or to send someone home to collect all this essential infor. Sione offered to go in the next trip to Takuu. We also felt that an organised association of Takuu’s now should facilitate our efforts. Hence, the resurrection of the association was discussed next.

  3. Association Na Takuu

A constitution was required to register the association. Any discussions were postponed to the following week. The next meeting was to be held at Lakoa’s residence at 2pm Saturday 4th November.
