(9/7/97) EWEN _ Mr. Hume Ivan Ewen, beloved husband and best friend of Shirley, passed away peacefully on September 4, 1997 at the age of 74 years, after a lengthy and courageous battle with Parkinson's disease and cancer. He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by Shirley; his brother Cliff of Victoria; sister Iris Sutton of Vancouver; sister and brother-in-law, Joanne and Don Jepson of Calgary, and their families, Jim and Ingrid Jepson and their children, Emily and Andrew, Rob and Julie Jepson, and their children, Monica and Carolyn, Donna and Chris Lindeburg; and other nieces and nephews, and his many friends, including his pal Sadie. Ron was born in Edmonton, Alberta and came to Calgary with his family in 1966 where he has since resided. For the past twenty-one years, Ron has worked for the Calgary Co-operative Association. He also coached Minor Hockey for over twenty years, and was the President of the Simons Valley Hockey Association from 1996 to 1997. In 1976, Ron married Helen Kilgallon and they had two children, Ryan and Kimberley. Ron was an excellent Dad and was known for his sense of humor, his intelligence and always caring about others before himself. Besides his loving wife and children, Ron is also survived by parents, Ted and Anne Goosen of Balfour, British Columbia; a sister and brother-in-law, Terry and Allan McKinnon of Calgary; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Rick and Jennifer of Sherwood Park, and Roy and Tracey of Calgary; as well as his mother-in-law Brenda Kilgallon and her family. Betty was predeceased by her husband Snucks, son Lee, and daughter Adele. She is survived by her son Gerald (wife Liz); twins, Donna (husband Alfred) and Daniel; grandchildren, Curtis (wife Karen), Renee, Shannan (special friend Kevin), Shane (special friend Brenda), Brad, Jonathan, and Mark; and great-grandchildren, Joshua and Dillon. Gladys was born in Calgary on August 16, 1930, was raised in the Rosedale Community and attended Crescent Heights High School. Gladys volunteered her time and knitting skills for a variety of associations in Calgary. She is the loving mother of two sons and daughters-in-law, Ken and Diane Hamilton, and Keith and Jane Hamilton; a daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Greg McCarthy, all of Calgary; seven grandchildren, Autumn, Amanda, Kyla, Colin, Amanda, Ashley and Erika. (9/7/97) HUNKA _ August 14, 1923 to September 3, 1997. Mr. William (Bill) Hunka of Calgary passed away suddenly but peacefully at his home on September 3, 1997 at the age of 74 years. Bill was born in Andrew, Alberta on August 14, 1923 and was the youngest of nine children born to John and Maria Hunka. He was in active service in England during World War II, as a navigator and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. Upon his return, he graduated from the University of Alberta with a degree in Chemical Engineering and worked for many years as a Petroleum Engineer in Western Canada, Northern British Columbia, Ontario and Iran. His many loves included gardening and wood working, but most importantly, his family. Bill was a dedicated, loving father and a loyal friend. He will be sadly missed by his many friends and his sons, Kerry (Wendy), Derek (Shanna) of Calgary; daughter Janine (Ev) Innes of Okotoks; and grandchildren, Lisandra, Paul, Nolan, Braden and Connell Hunka and Everett Innes. Bill also leaves behind his sister Katherine Huculak; brother Nick Hunka; and sisters-in-law, Jennie Hunka and Kay Hunka of Edmonton. Bill will also be sadly missed by numerous nephews and nieces and by his cousin and good friend Alex Hunka. (9/7/97) LONGLEY _ Frank Gilbert, passed away peacefully in the presence of his family at the Rockyview Hospital on September 2, 1997. He was predeceased by his loving wife of sixty-two years, Barbara in 1992, as well as his daughter Arlene Frances (1972), son Frank Gilbert Jr. (1996), and grandson Leonard (1994). Frank was born in Winnipeg, MB on January 12, 1910. He married Barbara on March 1, 1930. Frank worked for the Manitoba Telephone System for thirty-four years, spending 1950 to 1958 in Virden, MB. He also served with the RCMP during World War II. Upon retirement in 1960, he moved to Victoria, BC where he pursued his love of fly tying and fishing. He was a member of the Golden Rods Club. In 1986 Frank moved to Burnaby with his wife and in 1993 after her passing, he settled in Calgary. He will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his son Dennis; his grandchildren, Merna (Derek), Barb (Peter), Suzanne, Ken (Laurie), Caroline (Nick), Kevin (Jackie), Angella, Debbie (Al), Michelle (Dennis), Richard; his great-grandchildren, Andrea, Lisa, Scott, Jill, Kevin, Brittney, Christopher, Stephanie, Kendra, Breanne, Taryn; and many nieces and nephews. Born in Kazan, Russia she moved to Canada in 1927 and farmed with her husband Michael in Southern Alberta until their retirement in 1968. She was predeceased by her husband in 1974. Xenia is survived by one son Edward (Joanne) Rogers, Calgary; two daughters, Natalie (Alex) Wilkinson and Olga (Dave) Cote of High River; nine grandchildren, Chris (Mary) Rogers, Texas, Kathy (Al) Brown, Calgary, Jon (Bicky) Rogers, Edson, Tim (Pearl) Rogers, Edmonton, Michelle Rogers, Shelley (Merv) Hesla, Terri Wilkinson, Calgary, Wendy (Doug) Kennedy, High River, Lynn (Kenn) Jennyc, Calgary; two step-grandchildren, Dainard and Bart Willisko and twelve great-grandchildren. (9/7/97) SEXSMITH _ Mr. Lawrence (Larry) Edward Sexsmith of Calgary, passed away in Kelowna, B.C. on September 4, 1997, at the age of 78 years. Born in Virden, Manitoba on June 15, 1919, Lawrence was Sgt. in the P.P.C.L.I. during the Second World War. After returning from overseas, he worked long and hard in the Oil Patch in many locations, ranging from the North Slope of Alaska to the Birdsville Track of Australia. Larry was a member of the R.C.L. Branch No. 276, and will be remembered by those with whom he bent an elbow. To Lawrence's many friends and colleagues, we hope that you will remember him with the same warmth, respect and caring that he felt for you. Lawrence was a heck of a man and we miss him deeply. Lloyd is also survived by thirteen grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren; three sisters, Marge Newman of Belle Plaine, Saskatchewan, Ethel Keating of Salmon Arm, B.C. and Jean Roberts of Parksville, B.C. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Lloyd is predeceased by his parents, and his four brothers. Funeral Services will be held in the Chapel of MOUNTAIN VIEW FUNERAL HOME on Tuesday, September 9, 1997 at 10:00 a.m. Interment to follow at Mountain View Memorial Gardens.
