ARNELL _ Mrs. Mary Kathleen (Kay) Arnell (nee Calloway) of Calgary, passed away at Central Park Lodge on October 8, 1997 at the age of 85 years. Kay was born September 12, 1912 in Cochrane where she grew up as a child. She met her husband in Cochrane, to whom she was married for fifty years. Kay is survived by her four children, Helen Krause of Edmonton, Gordon Arnell of Calgary, George Arnell of Red Deer, and Robert Arnell of Calgary; as well as fourteen grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandchild. She is also survived by her sister Bess Brooks of Cochrane. Kay was predeceased by her husband Percy in 1982. EVANS _ Edgar Evans, beloved husband of Maxine Evans, passed away peacefully at home with his family at his side on October 10, 1997 of prostate cancer at the age of 62 years. He was the loving father of Murray (Angie) of Drumheller, Glennys (Terry) Oskoof of Vegreville, Alberta, and Trevor (Deneen) of Bluffton, Alberta. Grandpa will be greatly missed by his grandchildren, Erica, Altiera, Braydi, Christina and Jordan. Edgar was predeceased by his father Luther and mother Jenetta, brother Jack "Tex" Evans of Hartford, Connecticut, two brothers-in-law, Walter and Bill. He is also survived by three brothers, Wayne of Drumheller, Luther (Phyllis) of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, Glen (Dolly) of Calgary; two sisters, Morwen Hartle, Jessie Cutts both of Calgary; brother-in-law Dr. Murray (Charlene) McPherson of Cranbrook, BC; numerous nieces and nephews. FREEMAN _ Mr. John "Jack" Francis Freeman passed away at the Foothills Hospital on October 8, 1997 at the age of 85 years. He is survived by his wife Pauline "Dot"; his son Robert Freeman of Red Deer, Alberta; his daughter Barbara (Andrew) Heshdahl of Edson, Alberta; his grandchildren, Carol, Robert and Kevin; and his great-grandchildren, Nicole and Turner. Also surviving are his stepchildren, Gordon (Phylis) Landon, Terry (Debbie) Landon, all of Markham, Ontario, Trudi (Ronald) Brooks of Okotoks, Alberta, and Sharon (Raymond) Crockett of Calgary. Jack was predeceased by his first wife Dorothy May in 1971 as well as his brothers, James and Joseph and his sister Vera. Jack spent many years working in Central Alberta. After his retirement from his management accounting occupation he moved to Calgary. He and Pauline were married in 1990. GIMBEL _ Ruth Helen Johnson Gimbel passed to her rest on October 4, 1997, at her residence in Calgary, at the age of 96 years. Ruth was born in Isanti, Minnesota on September 28, 1901 to Swedish immigrants. Her father became a Seventh-day Adventist minister and his responsibilities took him to Lincoln, Nebraska where Ruth spent most of her growing up years. In 1917 the family moved to Edmonton and then to Falun, Alberta where Ruth's father engaged in gospel work among Scandinavian settlers in central Alberta. Ruth attended Normal School in Edmonton. Her teaching career led her to a country school east of Beiseker, Alberta. There she met and married Jacob Allan Gimbel. Seven children were born to this union. Ruth and Jake's home rang with music as Ruth accompanied male quartets and other vocal rehearsals and taught piano lessons to many community children. Ruth also served as church pianist and organist and played for weddings, funerals, and community music programs. Like many farm women, Ruth planted, harvested and preserved a garden, sewed for her family and cooked for threshing crews. Ruth and Jake farmed until their retirement in 1967, when they moved to Calgary. Despite the financial stresses during and following the Great Depression, they managed to provide a Christian education for each family member. Ruth was an active and devoted member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Ruth is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Hervey Gimbel and his wife Ann of Redlands, California, Courtney Gimbel and his wife Bette of Chehalis, Washington, Dr. Howard Gimbel and his wife Judy of Calgary; three daughters and sons-in-law, Elaine and her husband Pastor Dan Skoretz of Colton, California, Naida and her husband Bill Oliver of Kelowna, Glenda and her husband Dr. Donald Schafer of Portland, Oregon; as well as twenty-six grandchildren, thirty-six great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandson. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Jacob in 1996, and daughter Averil in 1928. HAWKES _ Paul Vincent Hawkes, beloved father and grandfather, passed away Wednesday, October 8, 1997 at the age of 77. He is survived by his four children, Paul Jr. (Linda) of Fort St. John, B.C., Gillian (Jim) Wickes of Red Deer, Jean Duff of Black Diamond, and Julie (Tully) Clifford of Calgary; also grandchildren, Kim, Jason, Katherine, Vanessa, Vincent, Billie-Jean, Alison, Lisa, Kyle; and great-grandchildren, Paden and Raelene. He is also survived by his brothers, Murray (Marg) of Vancouver, and Douglas (Dorothy) of Calgary; and his sister Hazel Fraser of Nova Scotia. Also surviving him are numerous nephews, nieces and cousins. Paul was a fourth generation Calgarian born on March 24, 1920. In the Second World War, Paul served as combat aircrew with R.C.A.F. 408 Squadron, completing one Bomber Command Tour. He was a member of the Air Gunners Association and Aircrew Association - Calgary. Paul worked for Calgary Power, Cominco and spent over forty-one years as a commercial Realtor with A.E. LePage Real Estate. HAYNES _ Jessie Alberta (Cherie), aged 90 years, of Claresholm, Alberta, passed away October 10, 1997. She is survived by three nieces, Dorothy Nowlin, Elaine (Bud) Whitehead of Claresholm, Doris (Ken) Hawk of Nanton; two nephews, Dean (Vera) Schram of Calgary, Don (Ellen) Schram of Hinton; numerous great-nieces, great-great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nephews. She was predeceased by her parents the late Samuel and Minnie Schram, brother Herbert Schram in 1973, and a sister Lula Lepard in 1974. Born at Claresholm, she received her education at Starline, and later worked in Calgary. Cherie moved to Olds and took a Nursing Aide course and following her graduation in 1951 returned to Claresholm and worked in the Claresholm Municipal Hospital until retiring in 1970. The hospital work Cherie loved most was tending the newborn babies. She moved to the Porcupine Hills Lodge in 1988 and resided there until moving to the Willow Creek Auxiliary Hospital and Nursing Home in 1992. Cherie loved music and enjoyed playing the piano. HENRY _ Mrs. Marion Gertrude Henry (nee Sunderland), beloved wife of Mr. George Henry of Calgary, passed away unexpectedly at the Foothills Hospital on Friday, October 10, 1997, at the age of 80 years. Marion was born on July 21, 1917 in Marengo, Saskatchewan. She was an active member of the Kerby Centre, Go Getters, Roses and Thorns, Gliders and longtime member of Foothills United Church. Marion volunteered with Meals on Wheels and the Heart and Stroke Foundation. She has also competed in the Senior Games in many events. Besides here loving husband, Marion is survived and going to be dearly missed by two sons and daughters-in-law, and two daughters and sons-in-law, Jack and Sandy Olorenshaw of Rainbow Lake, Jo and Bob Fox, Arnold and Donna Henry, and Elaine and George Burtis, all of Calgary; seven grandchildren, Wendy, Debbie, Wally, Blair, Lona, Karrie, and Deanne; and eight great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Elsie and Bernie Lukacs; and a sister-in-law Jeanette Sunderland. Marion was predeceased by her brother Wesley. MARKER _ August Solberg "Gus" At Kingston General Hospital, on Tuesday, October 7, 1997, after a prolonged illness, Gus Marker in his 93rd year, beloved husband for sixty-five years of Lillian May Malroney; survived by several nieces and nephews. Mr. Marker's professional hockey career began in 1928 with the Tulsa Oilers (A.H.A.) and included the Detroit Olympics (I.H.L.), Detroit Red Wings (N.H.L.), Montreal Maroons (N.H.L.) where he was a member of the Stanley Cup winning team of 1934 to 1935, Toronto Maple Leafs and New York Americans (N.H.L.) where he retired from playing in 1942. His hockey career continued with the Tulsa Oilers (U.S.H.L.) where he managed and coached for two seasons. Mr. Marker's business career included owning and operating Marker Ready Mix Concrete, Marker Block and Tile and Marker Building Materials. He was involved with a number of professional associations including: The National Concrete Products Association of Canada; The Concrete Pipe Association of Canada; The Concrete Pipe Association of America; and the Builder's Exchange. He was a member of Cataraqui Lodge No. 92 A.F. & A.M., 32 Degree Scottish Rite Mason (Rose Croix), a former member of the Kiwanis Club of Kingston, Cataraqui Golf & Country Club, Kingston Yacht Club, Kingston Curling Club and Ad & Sales Club. Mr. Marker was also a former Alderman of the City of Kingston. The family received friends at the Robert J. Reid & Sons Funeral Home, 309 Johnson Street (at Barrie Street), Kingston, Ontario, on Friday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Funeral Service will be held at St. George's Cathedral, King Street East (at Johnson Street), Kingston, Ontario, on Saturday, October 11 at 11:00 a.m. Interment Cataraqui Cemetery. PENNETTA _ Paolo Pennetta, beloved husband of Mrs. Andreina of Calgary, Alberta, passed away suddenly on October 9, 1997 at the age of 60 years. Paolo was born on January 25, 1937 in Fossacesia, Italy. He came to Canada in 1966, residing in Calgary. He enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren, as well as reading Italian literature, watching sports, movies and playing fusball. Besides his loving wife, Paolo is also survived by his children, a daughter and two sons, Nickie and her husband Steve Parton of Airdrie, Alberta; Mario and his wife Rose Pennetta, and Anthony, all of Calgary, Alberta; four granddaughters, Amanda, Melanie, Andrea and Sabrina. He is also survived by a sister Anna and her husband Aldo Sforza of Rome, Italy; and his mother Melanina Pennetta of Fossacesia, Italy. THOMPSON _ Grace Anne (nee GALLAMORE) passed away suddenly on Monday, October 6, 1997, in White Rock, B.C. at the age of 62. Loving mother of Donna (Mike) of White Rock, Cheryl (Pat) of Calgary, and Ken of White Rock; and grandmother to Brianne and Ryan of Calgary, Jessica of Thorsby, AB, Samantha and Mitchell of Sarnia, ON. Grace (Anne) is survived by her mother Jenny Gallamore of Trail; sisters, Jessie (Bob) Walters of Calgary, Helen (Lloyd) McLelland of Rossland, Lois (Ken) Koshey of Trail; her brother Les (Marlene) Gallamore of Tacoma, Wash.; and many nieces and nephews. Grace (Anne) was born in Trail, B.C., lived in Calgary until retiring to White Rock. Grace (Anne) worked many years for Canada Safeway and the Foothills Hospital before retiring. She was known for her caring of the elderly and continued to care and be involved with the elderly up until her passing. Grace (Anne) will be sadly missed, but fondly remembered by all who knew her. WATSON _ Edward (Jock) Watson of Calgary, passed away peacefully at the Rockyview General Hospital on October 9, 1997 at the age of 89 years. Jock moved to Canada in 1951 and throughout his life worked at United Trailer, Domtar and the Tradewinds Hotel. He has been a resident of the Bow Valley Lodge 300 for the past four years. Jock was a member of the British Canadian Club and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 285, and will be lovingly missed by his family and many friends. Jock is survived by his two sons and a daughter-in-law, Dave and his wife Sharon and their children, David, Jason and Kari, and Ed and his children, Kristian and Kelsey, all of Calgary. He is also survived by a sister Annie, and two nieces, Rae and Betty, all of Scotland; as well as a niece Margaret Brinson of Didsbury. Jock was predeceased by his wife Eleanor (Nellie) in 1995.
