(9/15/97) HARRIS _ Nellie Adeline Gray Harris. With mixed emotions of overwhelming sadness yet, tremendous relief and eternal joy, Nellie left this life on September 12, 1997. A brilliantly talented and beautiful lady, Nellie was born in a small Manitoba town in the twenties, grew up through the hardship of the depression, only to face the horrors of war. She loved dancing, beach parties and rollerskating but many of her numerous handsome boyfriends did not again. During a torrential downpour in 1949, she married the love of her life Glyndwr, had a child and slowly started a long, dark descent into a cruel and bitter world of manic-depressive schizophrenia. So much of her intellectual promise was poisoned by this blackness. She had held such promise; she was so smart; what incredible feats might she have accomplished? She did write brilliant poetry, a novel about her father's forty-nine years as a CPR conductor and share her love of nature. And, she touched a little girl's life immeasurably. Nellie told her, in an enchanted forest, if you ring a bluebell, fairies will hear it. That newly departed souls follow the path of moonlight on water towards heaven. Always snap a snapdragon. Pick up a lost penny. And by giving this little girl life, it had been her greatest accomplishment. A mother's true love can never be smothered by madness, her generous giving nature never turned by the heartless reactions to one in such an affliction, nor her true heart and soul be darkened by the awful breast cancer which so cruelly claimed her. In memory of this great woman, please tell someone you love to get a mammogram, or make a donation to help improve our mental health facilities and programs, and tonight, tell your mother you love her in person, by phone or in prayer. Fondly remembered by her daughter Ellyn Francis (Wayne) of Okotoks; and her brother Jack Gray (Marilyn) of Winnipeg. A lovely Service in her honour will be held on Monday, September 15, 1997 at 11:00 a.m. At Pierson's Funeral Home, 4121 - 17 Avenue S.E., Calgary. Arrangements in care of PIERSON'S FUNERAL SERVICE. Telephone: 235-3602.
