(9/30/97) ANDERSON _ Ian Halliday Anderson of Calgary, passed away Friday, September 26, 1997, at the age of 61 years. Ian was born in Trochu, Alberta in 1935 and grew up in Drumheller before moving to Calgary. Ian will be lovingly remembered by his two daughters and sons-in-law, Wanda and Mark Eilers, and Darlene and Richard Faust; and four grandchildren, Daphne and Juliette Eilers, Tanis and Melanie Faust. He is also survived by his sister Carolyn Skoko of Calgary, and his brother Freeman Anderson of Victoria; and four nephews and five nieces. Ian was predeceased by his father in 1958, mother in 1983 and brother Bob in 1977. A Memorial Service and celebration of Ian's life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY'S "Chapel of the Bells" (2720 Centre Street North), on Wednesday, October 1, 1997 at 4:00 p.m. with the Rev. (9/30/97) CODE _ Arthur Warren Code of Duncan, B.C. passed away at home on September 26, 1997 after a brave battle with cancer, at the age of 79 years. He is survived by his beloved wife Alice of fifty-two years and their children, Faye (Tracy) Riches, Ron (Darlene) Code, Jean (Bill) Booth, Barbara (Bob) Howson, Bill (Denise) Code, David (Karen) Code; and nine grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son Stewart in 1994. He was born on January 6, 1918 at Phippen, Sask. and farmed there and at Antler, Sask., retired to Calgary, AB. and then Duncan, B.C. He served in the Air Force in World War II, and was a fifty-two year Legion member and a member of the Masonic Lodge since 1949. Beloved wife of Robert, she is survived by her children and their families: Darcie, Don, Tom, Sam; Jonathon and Joan; Susan, Dave, Jamie, William; Melissa and Tom. Also by her brother Laird and his wife Hazel Howland, nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her parents, Kathleen (Deakin) and Harold Howland. Robin was born in Winnipeg in 1932 and raised in The Pas and Stonewall, Manitoba. She won the Governor General's Award for her high school achievements and attended Queen's University for her first degree. After raising four children and numerous other vertebrates in Kingston, Ontario, she and Bob returned to Calgary where Robin attended the University of Calgary. She proudly received her doctorate in Educational Psychology on June 5, 1997. Robin was an artist, educator, counsellor and researcher; and a lifelong member of the Anglican Church. The family wishes to extend special thanks to the exceptional staff and volunteers of the Rosedale Hospice, Homecare and the Tom Baker Cancer Centre, Particularly to Drs. (9/30/97) JESSEN _ Carl Nicolai, born in Bogense, Denmark, December 19, 1931, passed away September 26, 1997 at the age of 65, after a long and courageous battle with heart disease. Beloved husband and father, he leaves to mourn, his wife Annelise; and three children: daughters, Bettinna Anne Watson (Jack), and Anita Debbie Jessen (Peter Hunter); and a son Hans Peter Jessen (Jewel). Also left to mourn, are his family in Denmark: brothers, Peder, Jorgen, Carsten and Ole; sisters, Annelise and Hanne, along with their families. Nic was a wonderful and husband. He was a kind, compassionate and generous man, always putting the welfare of others ahead of himself. We loved him dearly and he loved us so. He is in a better place with God now, at peace at last. (9/30/97) McCARTY _ A Golden Heart Stopped Beating Two Working Hands At Rest May 13, 1896 - September 24, 1997 Barbara, at the age of 101, passed away peacefully at the Beverly Centre where she had been a resident for the past five and a half years. Born in Calumet, Michigan, Barbara arrived at Rosalind, Alberta in 1902 with her father George McTavish and her five siblings. She married James Blanchard McCarty in 1917 and they farmed at Kelsey, Alberta for many years, moving to Calgary in 1946. Barbara was a very special, loving, caring person who always had a smile and a kind word for everyone she met. Her gentleness and great sense of humor will be dearly remembered by her family and friends. She is survived by her daughters, Helen Atkinson of Edmonton and Blanche (Lindsay) Cuthbertson of Calgary; fifteen grandchildren, twenty-eight great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren, and numerous nephews and nieces. Barbara was predeceased by her loving husband Blanchard forty years ago, daughter Velma LaBarge Carter, son James, son-in-law Ralph Atkinson, granddaughter Bonnie Atkinson and granddaughter-in-law Becky Cuthbertson. Terry is also survived by his brother Bob (Mimi); two sisters, Pat Stewart (Fletcher), Janice Johnson (Jack); as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. Terry was predeceased by his parents, Kathleen and James; and his son Shawn. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Terry was an avid sportsman. Terry's passion was basketball and he devoted his life to playing, coaching and encouraging others with his love of the game. (9/30/97) RICHARDS _ Mrs. Esther Richards of Calgary, formerly of the Horn Hill district, passed away at the Bowview Manor, Calgary on Monday, September 29, 1997, at the age of 94 years. Esther was born on March 23, 1903, in the Antler Hill area, the second youngest of nine children. She received her education in the rural school at Antler Hill and at Penhold. On December 26, 1929, Esther was united in marriage to Evan Richard. The couple then moved to the Horn Hill district, and enjoyed a life in the farming community. Esther was a lifetime member of the Clearview Women's Institute and the Horn Hill United Farm Women of Alberta. Esther enjoyed her home, swapping recipes and visiting her friends. She is survived by her daughter Joan; and her husband Ray Whitehead of Calgary; her two granddaughters, Cindy and Karen Whitehead of Calgary; a sister-in-law Phyllis McAllister of Innisfail; and numerous nieces and nephews. Esther was predeceased by her husband Evan in 1986. Frances is survived by her son Edward (Ted) (Florence); her daughter Bea of Edmonton; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was a lifetime member of the Maccabee Lodge. (9/30/97) TORVI _ Jennifer Jean passed away unexpectedly on September 26, 1997, at the Foothills Hospital, at the age of 27 years. She was born on May 18, 1970 at Foothills Hospital, and was a graduate of William Aberhart High School, and the University of Calgary in Education. After graduation, she worked in the Faculty of Continuing Education at the University of Calgary. She has touched the lives of many people in a special way with her kindness, gentleness, love, sense of humor and will be sorely missed. We are saddened by her sudden passing, but are thankful for the memories and the legacy which we have been allowed to share in. She will never by forgotten by those who love her. (9/30/97) YOUNG _ Dorothy Young (nee Simpson), passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, September 27, 1997. She is survived by her loving husband Mac of fifty-five years; daughter Lorraine (Doug) Gill of Edmonton; granddaughters, Dawn (Peter) Heinemeyer of Calgary, Robin Kaluski of Vancouver; great-grandchildren, Greg and Kara Heinemeyer; brother Robert G. Simpson; and sister-in-law Anna of Nanaimo; brother-in-law, Douglas Young, and sister-in-law Joyce Young of Sidney, BC; and by five nieces and two nephews. Dorothy was born at Sandy Hook, Manitoba on August 27, 1918 and lived in Winnipeg until 1930 when the family moved to Montreal where she lived until 1964. In 1964 she moved to Vancouver and in 1966 to Calgary. Her great love in life was music. She received her Licentiate in violin from the Royal Schools of Music, London, England as well as a scholarship. She played in a number of orchestras, including the Women's Symphony of Montreal and the Calgary Philharmonic. She was a member of the Calgary South Rotary Anns for twenty-nine years. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made directly to the Canadian Cancer Society (No. 408, 1305 - 11 Avenue S.W., Calgary, AB, T3C 3P6).
