ARMSTRONG _ Alice Marjorie (nee Griffith), peacefully in hospital on Friday, February 6, 1998 in Ottawa in her 87th year. A long-time Alberta resident, beloved wife of the late Martyn John Armstrong of Calgary. Predeceased by her sister Thelma Enid Foster deBalinhard of Red Deer. Survived by her loving son Major John G. Armstrong (Gaetane) of Nepean; granddaughters, Christine and Linda; and many loving nieces and nephews. In accordance with Marjorie's wishes, there was no Visitation or Service. Arrangements in the care of TUBMAN FUNERAL HOMES, 403 Richmond Road, Ottawa. Ashes will be interred in Alberta by family in the spring. BELL _ Edith Bell of Calgary, passed away at the Peter Lougheed Centre on February 7, 1998. Edith was predeceased by her husband Jack in 1978. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Ken and Carol; and a daughter and son-in-law, Norma and Todd; and by five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. BLYTH _ Evelyn Victoria (nee Bertram), passed away at the Bethany Care Centre February 7, 1998 at the age of 88 years. BOWMASTER _ Freda Margaret (nee Nuell) of High River passed away at the High River Nursing Home on February 8, 1998 at the age of 76 years. CENDACH _ Mr. Sergio Cendach, beloved husband of Mrs. Maria Cendach of Calgary, passed away suddenly on Friday, February 6, 1998 on his 57th Birthday. Sergio was born February 6, 1941 in Zacchigni, Umago d'Istria, Italy (presently Croatia). He moved to Canada in 1962 and began working for C.P.R. in 1964, where he worked as a Car Man Inspector until his death. He married Maria in 1970 in Calgary. Besides his loving wife, Sergio is also survived by two sons, Elvis and his fiancee Rosanna Styner, and Frank, both of Calgary; his father Martin Cendak of Cittanova, Croatia; his sister and brother-in-law, Graziella and Luciano Zacchigna, and their two daughters and family, all of Croatia; brother and sister-in-law, Mario and Rosa Cendach of Penticton, and their two daughters and five nieces. He is also survived by Maria's parents, sister, brothers, nieces and nephews; as well as other relatives and friends. Sergio was predeceased by his mother Maria Cendak, and his brother Luciano Cendak. CHRISTENSEN _ Chester Lewis of Calgary passed away at the Peter Lougheed Hospital on February 8, 1998 at the age of 65 years. Chester will be lovingly remembered by his children, Gordon (Barb), Geoff, Blair (Anita); grandchildren, Sara-Lynn, Whitney, Bridie and Moore; brother Charlie (Rosemary); niece and nephew, Karen and Rick and their families. COUCH _ Roderick Gordon, passed away peacefully February 6, 1998 at the age of 63 after a short battle with cancer. DALGETTY _ Mr. James William Dalgetty of Calgary passed away peacefully after a brief illness, at the Foothills Hospital on February 7, 1998 at the age of 73 years. He was predeceased by his wife Maxine in 1995. He is the loving father of two sons and one daughter-in-law, and one daughter and son-in-law, Brian of Canmore, Barrie and Tracey of Los Angeles, and Brenda and John Creasey of Calgary; three grandchildren, Michael, Richard and Jemma Creasey; and one great-granddaughter Emily Creasey, all of Calgary. He is survived by three brothers-in-law and their families, Gordon and Lila Bossenberry of Lethbridge, Gilbert and Mary Bossenberry, and Don and Janice Bossenberry, all of Salmon Arm; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. Jim was a painting contractor for forty years until his retirement in 1985. Jim was a very caring and loving man who will be greatly missed by his family and all those who knew him. We love you Dad. FINDLAY _ Robert (Bob) Noble, beloved husband of Violet, passed away peacefully on February 7, 1998 at the age of 91 years. Bob is survived by numerous nieces and nephews; and sister-in-law Nora Findlay of Jasper, AB. Bob's career with the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce of forty-five years, relocated him many times, leaving his many friends and remembrances all across Canada. Upon his retirement in 1971, Bob and Vi relocated to Victoria, B.C. where they spent many happy years, only to return to Calgary to be with family and loved ones. GABLEHOUSE _ Ruben Samuel Gablehouse, beloved husband of Mrs. Olive Gablehouse of Calgary, passed away at the Foothills Hospital on Sunday, February 8, 1998 at the age of 79 years. He was born in Calgary on October 8, 1918. From birth until he joined the Navy, Ruben lived in Calgary and various small towns around Calgary. Ruben was a Stoker in the Navy from 1941 to 1945 and was discharged as a Chief Petty Officer. After the war, he resumed employment as a Steam Engineer, working in several plants around Calgary until his retirement from the University of Calgary in 1984. Ruben was artistic, which was demonstrated by the home he built and many of its contents. Ruben is survived by his best friend and loving wife Olive. He is also survived by a son Brian; a daughter Judy; two grandchildren, Naomi (Cary) and Jeremy; and a great-granddaughter Kylee. Ruben is also survived by three sisters, Edna, Helen (Don), Betty; two brothers, Robert (Rose) and Don (Muriel); a sister-in-law Eileen; and brothers-in-law, Harold and Simeon; plus nieces, nephews and many friends. GIERS _ Mr. Stanley (Stan) Giers, beloved husband of Mrs. Toby Giers of Calgary, passed away at the Foothills Hospital on Sunday, February 8, 1998 at the age of 80 years. Stan was born October 4, 1917 in Poland and served in the Polish Army during the second world war, and was a P.O.W. for four years during that time. He joined the American Occupation Forces in Europe after the war and served as Corporal. He came to Canada in August, 1951 and married Toby in May, 1957 in Vancouver. In Canada he worked in the construction industry and with Richmond Plywood for twenty-six years until his retirement in 1983. In Vancouver, Stan was a member of St. Casimir's Catholic Parish for many years until 1992 when he and Toby moved to Calgary. Besides his loving wife Toby, Stan is also survived by his son David and daughter-in-law Margaret of Calgary; and his nieces and nephews in Poland. GREEN _ James "Jim" Harris Green of Calgary was born February 18, 1952 at Rivers, Manitoba and passed away February 9, 1998, at the age of 45 years, surrounded by his family after a lengthy illness. He is survived by his wife Debbora; daughters, Andrea, Katherine; and son Jonathan; his mother Edythe Howard; sisters, Kaye (Bob) Bysouth, Susan (Gary) Marshall, Joanne (Felix) Asencio and Deb (Craig) Nalder; nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. GROSS _ Delores Gross (nee Helm) departed peacefully to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, February 7, 1998 at the age of 57 years. Her son Shan; daughter Pamela (Lyle) Deines; her precious granddaughter Lindsay; family, friends, and those whose lives she has touched will lovingly miss her. Del will be remembered for her warmth, her spirit of giving, and her loyalty to those close to her. IRVINE _ Brian Robert Irvine passed away suddenly on February 7, 1998 doing exactly what he wanted, working with horses. Brian was born on December 5, 1936 in Whitewood, Saskatchewan and raised in the Tantallon area. As a young man, Brian found work on the railroad. Later he met his wife Laura in Minnedosa, and subsequently they married on August 25, 1956. Brian joined the Armed Forces in 1958 and was stationed in Calgary with the Queen's Own Rifles. Brian went on to achieve an award for driving one million miles accident free. In 1964, Brian was honorably discharged driving commercially throughout Western Canada. Brian's lifelong fascination with horses led him to move his family to the Crossfield area in 1972. Over the next twenty-five years, Brian vigorously built and improved his horse herd, specializing in Registered Foundation Quarter Horses. Brian's integrity, ability, and pure "horse sense" were renowned and respected by those who knew him. Many horseman in Canada and the United States will miss his outgoing nature and willingness to lend a helping hand. Brian was proud to hold lifetime memberships in the American Quarter Horse Association and the Foundation Quarter Horse Registry. Working with and improving the Quarter Horse breed was not only his first love, but his chosen life-long work. Brian was predeceased by his father Robert Irvine in 1957, mother Anne Kingdon in 1982, grandson Eric Irvine (in infancy) in 1985. Brian is survived by his loving wife of forty-one years, Laura; children, Sharon Marsh, Bonnie Harrison, Robert (Sylvia), Brian, Heather (Trevor) Gadd, Scott (Leanne), foster son David; sisters, Gwen Bromberg of Calgary, Mable Godwin of Tantallon; brother Lawrence Gavelin of Port Alberni. Brian was proud of his nineteen grandchildren who were a delight to him in the latter part of his life. Brian was instrumental in introducing the grandchildren to the horses. These same grandchildren possess Brian's humor, zest for reading and travel, not to mention a fascination with horses. JONES _ Michael Kevin Jones of Calgary, passed away suddenly on Friday, February 6, 1998 at the age of 39 years. Mike is survived by his daughter Rhea; and son Nathan of Blackie, Alberta; his mother Marie; sister Lori Kempe; brother-in-law Bert Kempe; nephew Michael; and nieces, Rhianne and Brittanii of Thorold, Ontario; his grandmother Helen Lesdow; and grandfather George of Hamilton, Ontario; as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins in Ontario and the U.S. He was predeceased by his much loved father Leonard in 1991. Mike leaves behind his friends at the City of Calgary where he worked for many years. He also leaves to mourn many close friends in Calgary, the rest of Alberta, B.C. and Ontario. KLEIST _ Arthur (Art) Kleist passed away suddenly at his residence on February 8, 1998 at the age of 67 years. Art is survived by his special friend Millie Parker of Calgary; his two sisters, Audrey and Elaine, and his Aunt Kay, all residing in Ontario. LaROSE _ Senator Thomas William LaRose was born December 1, 1926 in Manitoba and passed away in Calgary on February 7, 1998 at the Foothills Hospital, after a long illness. He is survived by his loving wife of forty-five years, Emma (Mary) LaRose. He is survived by nine children and spouses, Rose LaRose (Peter), Tony LaRose (Kathy), Lorraine LaRose (Brian), Doris Jacobs (Joe), Geraldine Normand (Sam), Kathleen Barker (Frank), Elinor Hache (Rudy), Aleric LaRose (Gina) and Sharlene Carlson (Bill), all of Alberta. Tom is also survived by five sisters, Reta, Mae, Julia, Doreen, Theresa; twenty-five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and many friends and relatives who loved him. LIND _ Jack Lind, beloved husband of Ethel Lind, passed away February 8, 1998 at the age of 78 years, after a lengthy illness at Bethany Care Centre. Jack was born in Edmonton, Alberta and received his education there. At the age of sixteen he started working in meat cutting and preparing meat for sale, graduating to Meat Supervisor for Horne and Pitfield Foods. He retired at the age of sixty-five to Lethbridge, Alberta. Jack enjoyed travelling, camping and was an avid fisherman. He also took up and perfected golfing. He is survived by his wife Ethel; three sons and their families, Gerald, Larry and Terry; two stepsons, Raymond and Alvin; stepdaughter Donna and their families. Also surviving are fourteen grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren; a sister Dorothy and her husband, living in Fort St. John, British Columbia; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws, and many close friends. LOEWEN _ Jacob J. Loewen of Airdrie, passed away at 68 years of age, after a brief but courageous fight against cancer at the Peter Lougheed Hospital in Calgary. He is survived by his loving wife Mildred; sons, Ron (Anne), Ted (Deb) of Calgary, and Tim (Diana) of Edmonton; daughters, Laryne (Hart) of Calgary, and Marlene of Windsor, Ontario. MacNEILL _ Frederick William MacNeill passed away after a short illness in his beloved home, Vancouver, B.C., Saturday, February 7, 1998. Fred was born in Hampshire, PEI, July 17, 1913, son of John Frederick and Beatrice (Watts) MacNeill. His life's journey brought him to Vancouver with his widowed mother and sister Rita in 1929. Proudly, he achieved his private pilot's licence in 1938, met his lifetime partner, Millie, and saw service with the Royal Canadian Air Force prior to, during and after World War II. After the service, Fred was an accountant and retired from Gough & Co. in 1976. He enjoyed his senior years with his family and travelled extensively. He is survived by his loving wife Mildred; daughter Beverley Andrews (Dave) of Calgary; sons, Brian (Mary) of Richmond, Derek of Vancouver; five grandchildren, Scott Andrews (Nicole), Calgary, Mark Andrews (fiancee Glenna), Calgary, Stephen Andrews, Perth, Australia, Tom MacNeill, Richmond, Heather Herndier (Kevin), Vancouver; and two great-grandchildren, Geoffrey Andrews, Calgary and Skye MacNeill, Richmond. He was also survived by his dear sister Rita McLeish (Ken), White Rock, who sadly passed away within hours. The legacy Fred leaves is his love for family. McCORMICK _ Mr. Michael James McCormick Sr. passed away peacefully on Monday, February 9, 1998 at the Colonel Belcher Hospital in Calgary, Alberta, at the age of 75 years. Michael was born on October 20, 1922 at his family home at 228 Scarboro Avenue in Calgary. His father Eneas, a Southern Alberta pioneer and Calgary Alderman, founded well-known Riley & McCormick Ltd. Following active service with the RCNVR from 1940 to 1947, Michael had a long and distinguished career beginning as Director of the Vancouver Tourist Bureau in 1949. In 1953, he moved to Montreal to join Vickers & Benson and later Cockfield Brown, before being engaged by CEMP Investments as General Manager. In 1968, he became a Director and Senior Vice-President of the House of Seagram Ltd., and President of the Association of Canadian Distillers. In 1969 he founded McCormick Cattle Company Ltd., beef cattle breeders in Foster, Quebec. In 1970 Michael was Grand Marshall of the St. Patrick's Day Parade in Montreal. He founded Garda Security Services Ltd. in 1973, a prestigious safety and protective security company with offices in Montreal and Toronto. He was received as a Knight of Magistral Grace with the Canadian Association of the Order of Malta in November of 1983. Michael moved to Sechelt on British Columbia's Sunshine Coast in 1985 where he took up writing. His story-telling, wisdom and sense of humour will be missed by everyone who knew him. He will be particularly missed by his sister Mary Guichon, several nieces, nephews, relatives and many, many friends in all corners of the globe. His family extends great thanks to the excellent nurses and doctors at the Colonel Belcher Hospital for the tremendously kind affection he received under their concerned care. MJOLSNESS _ Lloyd Granum Mjolsness, born September 7, 1916 at Sundre, Alberta passed away peacefully on February 7, 1998, surrounded by his loving family and the caring nursing staff at The Beverly Centre. Lloyd was loved and cherished by Mary, his best friend and wife of fifty-four years; daughter Marilyn (Brian) Will; daughter Gail Howat and Wes Martin; son Bob (Elaine); and grandchildren, Carter (Stacey) and Riley Will, Derek, David and Darcy Howat, Jason (Susan), Candace and Marina Grey; numerous nephews, nieces and cousins. He is survived by his brother Chester (Martha) of Bottrel, Alberta; his sister Gladys Thomas of Calgary; and special aunt Thora Matkin of Carstairs, Alberta. Predeceased by his youngest sister Marian Chidlow (Red Deer, Alberta) in 1994. Lloyd attended school at McDougal Flats (west of Sundre, Alberta). After losing his father at age fourteen, he assumed responsibility with his Mother on the family farm. Lloyd led a full and active life. He and Chester shared interests in grain farming, operating as M & M Farming Co. in southern Alberta and Saskatchewan. They also had years of harmonious partnership in the lumber industry, operating as Mjolsness Bros. Ltd. at Sundre and Spray Lakes Sawmills at Canmore and Cochrane. As a loving husband, father and grandfather, Lloyd was highly respected by his family, and he cared deeply for them in return. He will be remembered for his honesty, integrity, sensitivity and generosity - touching everyone he met in a special way. Lloyd valued simplicity, the work ethic and sincerity. MUNKHOLM _ Mr. Milton Munkholm of Okotoks, passed away at the Vulcan Extendicare on February 5, 1998 at the age of 86 years. Milton was born in Warrens, Wisconsin on April 21, 1911. His family returned to their homestead at Milo in that same year. They eventually moved to High River, and then to Okotoks in 1927. He worked as a farm hand and derrick builder in the Okotoks and Turner Valley area. Milton moved back to the farm in Okotoks in 1945 where he resided until his retirement. He was predeceased by his wife Florence, his parents, one sister and four brothers. Milton is survived by his sons, Jim (Ardath) of Longview, Gordon (Eleanor) of Cochrane; his daughter Mary (Bob) Strang of Regina; and by twelve grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren. OLSON _ Shirley Clarice Olson passed away at the Bethany Care Centre on Monday, February 9, 1998 at the age of 58 years, after a long and courageous battle with M.S. Shirley, who is survived by her husband Vern, would have celebrated their Fortieth Anniversary in May of this year. PAGENKOPF _ Mr. Werner Klaus (Walter) Pagenkopf, beloved husband of Mrs. Karla Birgit (Peggy) Pagenkopf of Calgary, passed away at the Foothills Hospital on Friday, February 6, 1998, after a brief and unexpected illness at the age of 57 years. Walter was born on January 8, 1941 in Gumbinnen, East Prussia (Germany), the youngest of five boys. When he was twelve, Walter, his mother and brothers came to Canada and settled in the Medicine Hat area. In 1957 Walter's family moved to Calgary where he later attended the U of C, graduating in 1966 with his B.Sc. Walter married Birgit Keudel in July 1964 and together they raised a family of three children. He worked in the Oil Industry for over twenty-five years, mainly for Canadian Superior Oil and Mobil Oil, retiring in 1992. Besides his loving wife, Walter is survived by two sons and a daughter, Cort and his wife Bettina of Edmonton, Monika, and Peter of Calgary. He is also survived by his brothers, Armin (Gerda) of Kelowna, Hans (Ingrid), Erhard (Ursula), all of Calgary; and many other family members in Calgary and Germany. He was predeceased by his parents, Walter and Maria, and his eldest brother Dieter. Walter was first and foremost a devoted family man. He will be lovingly remembered as one who lived according to his own principles of loyalty and honesty. Walter was deeply philosophical, with a wonderful sense of humor and left a lasting impression with all who knew him. PERRY _ Mr. Kenneth Andrew Perry, beloved husband of Mrs. Olga Perry of Calgary, passed away at the Foothills Hospital on February 7, 1998 at the age of 73 years. Ken was born on April 20, 1924 in Highmore, South Dakota. He moved to Mantario, Saskatchewan with his family in 1929, then later moving to Amos, Quebec. In Newmarket, Ontario, Ken attended Pickering College where he graduated and then directly joined the Air Force. He served overseas for four years, then moving to Calgary in 1946. Ken and his brother Bob purchased "King George Grocery" in 1947. In 1955, Ken and Olga married and began their family in 1956 with the birth of their son Bill. In 1979 Ken retired from the family business. Besides his loving wife, Ken is survived by a son Bill Perry; and a brother Robert Perry, both of Calgary. He is also survived by his nephew Paul Buckley of Vancouver, and numerous cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, Lewis (Bill) and Adaline Perry. RISHAUG _ Henry Albert of Black Diamond, AB passed away at the Oilfields Hospital on February 8, 1998 at the age of 82 years. Hank is survived by his loving wife Leah; two daughters, Avonne (Jim) Kennerd, Frances Rishaug (Ken Hamilton); and one son Terry Rishaug and stepson Ron Adam; as well as sister Clare Prosofsky; and one brother Maurice (Jean) Rishaug; sisters-in-law, Avis Rishaug and Norma Rishaug; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. SCHEMERHORN _ Elizabeth Jane (Betty) Schemerhorn (nee Spicer) of Calgary, passed away at the Rockyview Hospital on Tuesday, February 10, 1998 after a brief illness at the age of 99 years. Betty was born on January 3, 1899 in Carman, Manitoba. Betty grew up in the Fort Frances, Ontario area, moving to the Calgary area in the late 1920's. Betty also lived in the British Columbia interior from 1955 to 1969, before returning to Calgary. Betty married Bill Schemerhorn, with whom she spent over sixty years. Betty and Bill enjoyed thirty winters as "Snowbirds" in Phoenix, Arizona. Betty was a very active member of her Church and was also an enthusiastic sportsperson who actively followed sports and enjoyed curling, lawn bowling and golfing as recently as three years ago. Betty is the loving mother of Olive McIntosh of Calgary. Betty is survived by four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Betty was predeceased by her husband Bill, two brothers, two sisters, one son-in-law Jack McIntosh. SMITH _ Gerald (Gerry) Fulton Smith of Calgary, passed away at his residence on Thursday, February 5, 1998 at the age of 67 years. THRALE _ Lorena June Thrale (nee Torrance), passed away suddenly at her home in Carstairs on February 8, 1998. She is survived by her six children, George, Robert, Richard, Roger, Caroline, Jeffrey; sixteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. June was born in Manitoba, June 4, 1916 and farmed in Manitoba until 1960. She resided in Manitoba and Saskatchewan before coming to Calgary in 1967. She retired in Carstairs in 1974. June was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary, Carstairs, Branch No. 53 for many years, as well as being a participant in many other community activities. June's first love was her children, but her second love was her art. She leaves a colorful legacy particularly for her family, but also for all those that knew and loved her. VANDERVELDE _ Janet May of Strathmore passed away at the Strathmore Hospital on February 10, 1998 at the age of 82 years. WRIGHT _ Myron Lynn passed away suddenly on Thursday, January 22, 1998 while enjoying his usual country drive around Pennant. Myron was born in Swift Current, June 7, 1921 to Daisy E. (Leas) and Roy M. Wright and was raised on the family farm northeast of Pennant, Sask., attending Ohioville School and Luther College. He drove truck for Barney Plewis from 1938 to 1942, hauling grain and then gasoline. At this time he joined the Canadian Army 43rd Provost Corps and while in the service he married Emily Singbell of Yellowgrass, Sask. on April 27, 1944 and left the service at the end of 1944. Again he went to work for Barney. On January 10, 1946 he joined Greyhound Lines in Regina and then transferred to Calgary. He and Mitzi (Emily) had three children, Cliff in 1946, Darryl in 1947 who died in infancy, and Cindy born in 1949. After their divorce, Myron married Evelyn E. de Repentiguy (Hanson) in 1952 and together they raised Cliff and Cindy. After thirty-six years with Greyhound, 3.2 million kilometers and thirty years of safe driving, early retirement saw Myron and Lynn move to Pennant. He again drove oil trucks, semis and buses for Southern Charterways and Sun West Coach. He enjoyed helping many area farmers with seeding, summerfallowing and harvests. He served as Mayor of the Village of Pennant from 1988 to 1994, was a fifteen year member of the Legion, a twelve year member of the F.O.E., and an active member of the Pennant Lions Club. Predeceased by Lynn on May 4, 1992, he is survived by one son Cliff (Stephanie), grandsons, Darryl, Cohn and Jeffrey; a daughter Cindy Piechotta (Steve), grandsons, Jason and Ryan (Kathy); and one great-grandson Brandon; one brother Mel (Eleanor) and family. Memorial Services were held in Pennant on Thursday, January 29, 1998 at 1:00 p.m. at Pennant Memorial Hall with the Reverend Ann Marie Allen officiating. Organist was Wendy Darrow, ushers were Dale Farnsworth and Shawn Sorensen. His honorary pallbearers were all of his many friends made over the years. Myron was honoured with a Greyhound Coach from Calgary with many friends and past co-workers and a Stagecoach bus from Weyburn with Weyburn and Regina area friends attending the service in Pennant.
