The untimely death of Owen Hart has yet again sent tragic shock waves through the wrestling world. Owen had only reached the young age of 34; the sadness of his death as a father, brother, son and uncle is very deep and strongly felt. Thoughts and prayers go out to Owen's wife Martha, his two children (Oje, 7, and Athena, 3) as well as the entire Hart family. He was, and is, beloved by all that were fortunate enough to work with him, know him, meet him and cheer for him.
I had the opportunity to meet Owen briefly on two occasions, and from all accounts he was an extraordinary human being and consummate performer, always having time to meet and greet his many fans.
At the time this was written little information had been made available as to the exact details of the situation causing his death. In short, Owen fell victim to a horrible and freak accident, as his ceiling harness snapped, plunging him close to five storeys, and ultimately to his death during WWF's Over the Edge pay-per view last night (May 23, 1999). He was being lowered to the ring on a guide wire when the harness carrying him released 15 meters (about 50 ft.) above the ground. He fell, hitting his head on a turnbuckle.
Jim Bradbury, spokesman for the local fire department, said Hart was killed instantly by the fall, witnessed by 18,000 horrified fans at the sold-out event.
The wrestling world has certainty not been good to the Hart family as of late. With the death of friend Brian Pillman, Brett's highly published contract problems, Davey Boy's severe health issues, and now this huge catastrophe…I'm sure the business will once again become subject to much criticism, as the theme of young superstars dying is becoming all too familiar!
Owen Hart will be missed, and this wrestling fan will forever remember the passion he put in to his work.
