In July of 1996 a Consumers Report Laboratory released independent test results
derived from testing 25 wood sealants and water repellents. The test was conducted
to judge color change in wood specimens. The outdoor test was conducted
from December or 1995 to July of 1996. Products that block water absorption
and ultraviolet (UV) radiation retain the highest degree of color. 5 Products
were rated "EXCELLENT", 5 products were rated "POOR", 6 products were rated
"VERY POOR", and the remaining 9 were rated "TOTAL FAILURE". Of these
products that most that failed are the products that you, the consumer can
easily purchase at your local home center or hardware store. The better products
generally can be purchased either mail order or from distributors.
One of the products tested was Men-Wood by MENCO. They placed 5th
out of the 25 with a rating of "Excellent." At that time Menco only
required one coat. As of 1996 Menco requires two coats at initial application
for best results. With this change and improvments to the formula, MEN-WOOD
out-performed all products on the market today. (
