Gig reviews
The Leicester Mercury - by Dave Davies
A special Christmas promotion by Radio Leicester's Friday FM
Show at a new
venue, promises regular live music as well as comedy, featured plenty in the way of
serious music. Diesel Park West were signed to Food Records in '89 and were Leicester's
biggest hopes for success since Family in the early '70s. Their debut album Shakespeare
Alabama recieved critical acclaim. Out of time then, they appear to be forerunners of
the whole Oasis/Blur-led Britpop scene, and last nights gig featured their original line-up
and their debut album in sequence. A nostalgic trip back to the early '90s by a bunch of
past-it 40-somethings? I had the same thoughts myself, but last nights show reafirmed
the power of primal rock 'n' roll, whatever the age of the protagonists. Their whole
performance had the audience mesmerised with a magical feel that transcended age
and image. Incandescent!
