JAL PANTHER BAND
CONGRATULATIONS
!
From the Jal Record: PANTHER PRIDE BRINGS HOME TROPHY
Members of the extra-curricular Panther Pride Band traveled to Dallas last Thursday to participated in the Sandy Lake Music Festival.
The band members, 19 in all, were accompanied by seven chaperones on the trip.
The bus left early Thursday morning for their trip. They arrived at Sandy Lake Amusement Park, warmed up their instruments and performed "Under the Sea" from The Little Mermaid and "Super Hits Mega Mix" before a panel of three distinguished judges--Dr. Ken Van Winkle of New Mexico State University, Dr. Robert Foster of the University of Kansas, and Dr. David McGuire, retired from North Texas State University.
The band was awarded a Division 2 or Excellent rating and a large trophy for their efforts.
The Jal Panther Band will be traveling to Dallas on April 1,2,3 to participate in the Sandy Lake Music Festival, and will stay in Arlington. While there, we will go to Six Flags. If there are Jal alums in the area, we will be performing on April 1 around 4 pm, at the Sandy Lake Amusement Park located in North Dallas just off I-35 north.
Thanx, Bill Dyer
12/16/98:
We have re-organized the band with an extra-curricular band whose responsibility is to perform at all football games and at all home basketball games. We had twenty students in this band, and they did a marvelous job of marching at halftime, and playing in the stands at the football games. We still have a first period band of thirty students. We have a seventh grade band of 28 students, a sixth grade band of 38 students, and a fifth grade band of 24 students.
The E.C. (Panther Pride) Band traveled to Ruidoso in October and marched
in the Aspenfest parade and performed their halftime show there aslo. There
were seven students who auditioned for the SENMMEA District Honor Band
in November, and two were selected;
Miss
Amanda Hobson, a sophomore clarinetist,
and
Mr. Kris Walls, a sophomore trumpeter.
They performed in the High School District Honor Concert on Saturday, December
10 in Hobbs. Mr. Keith Bearden, director of the "Goin Band from Raiderland"
at Texas Tech was the conductor. Four students auditioned for the New Mexico
Small School All-State Band in late November and these same two students,
Amanda and Kris were selected. They will go to Albuquerque on Jan. 6,7,8,
and 9 to prepare and perform. These same two performed last year with the
New Mexico Lions Band, and will be going to the Lions Convention in San
Diego, CA this summer with the Lions Band. I am really proud of these two
students, and am confident that the move to an extra-curricular band was
a good one.
The First Period Band played their concert on December 8. They played Christmas Overture, A Rockin' Christmas, Do You Hear What I Hear, and Super Hits Megamix. The Seventh Grade band also performed on the program and played, Jingle Bell Rock, Frosty the Snowman, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and Rock On Band. The fifth and sixth grade Bands will perform tomorrow. They will play Christmas Carols and finish the program with Jal Blue and Gold and On Jal Panthers.
