The family of Joe and Sandra Shiplet Tuten will celebrate the couple's
40th Wedding Anniversary on Saturday, March 13, 1999, from 2 p.m. to 4
p.m. at the Woolworth Library. Friends are invited to attend. No gifts
please.
A
twenty-four year basketball record was broken Friday, February 19, 1999,
at Eunice by Senior Jacob Melancon. Jacob, son of Feron and Pam Ford Melancon,
scored 48 points during the Jal-Eunice game. Jacob made 10 - 3 pointers.
This year he was named All-State receiver, All-Star in the Albuquerque
Journal, and All-District in football. Last year, he was All-State and
All-District in football and All-District in football, basketball, and
baseball. The former record holder Buddy Shotton, scored a total of 47
points on March 14, 1975 during the first round of the State Tournament.
Jal was playing Mesa Vista and won 79-66. Two days later, the Panthers
beat Wagon Mound 70-45 for the Class AA State Championship. This was the
first Jal basketball team in history to win state.

01-07-99 Mr. and Mrs. Norman Hicks recently celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in their home with their children and grandchildren. Bob and Susie Hicks of Farmington; grandson Lanny Hicks of Albuquerque; granddaughter Kelly Hicks of Las Cruces; Janet and James Ellis of Arlington, TX; granddaughters JerLeigh and Andrea Thompson of Dallas; Karen and Doak Ivey of Abilene, TX; granddaughter Trena Ivey of Abilene, TX; grandson Kenan Ivey of Abilene, TX were all home for the event, held during the Christmas holidays. The family surprised their parents with a trip to Hawaii. Norman and Margaret were married January 15, 1949 in Lubbock, TX. They have lived in Jal since that date. Norman is retired from El Paso Natural Gas Co. and Margaret was a Merle Norman cosmetic consultant.
Merryman Construction Co. celebrated its 40th anniversary Tuesday, October
27, 1998, in conjunction with owner Jake Merryman's 75th birthday.
Jake celebrated with a barbeque at the American Legion Hall.
Over 300 well-wishers attended to eat and to wish Jake "Happy Birthday".
