15.  SARAH EVELINE5 COPPLE (CATHERINE4, JACOB PETER3, NICHOLAS2, MICHAEL1) was born February 28, 1811 in Clark Co., Indiana, and died October 02, 1897 in Orange County, Indiana.  She married JOHN SANDERS October 12, 1829 in Valeen, Orange County, Indiana, son of RICHARD SANDERS and ELIZABETH BREEZE.  He was born May 03, 1803 in North Carolina, and died July 06, 1876 in Valeen, Orange Co., Indiana.

Notes for SARAH EVELINE COPPLE:
From Yvonne Barrell:
Sharah was born in the fort in South East Township.  This fort was built of heavy logs, on the "Old Harnard Place" near Patoka Creek, Orange Co., Ind.  It stood just across the creek Patoka, on what was in 1913, the Road from Valeene to Hardinsburg, on the side of the creek nearest Hardinsburg.

Her parents, who were natives of Virginia, tall typical Dutch people from Holland???, were among the pioneers who helped build the Old Fort and fight Indians.

She had an abundance of long, straight black hair.  She often smoked a pipe and was quiet and had little to say in old age.  She sat very erect in her chair and spoke very distintly.

Sarah and her husband were both about 5' 10" tall.  Sarah was a handsome woman in her younger days with blue eyes and dark hair.  She was very tall and straight and was until she died.

The above was taken from a booklet entitled "The Weathers and Sanders Family" written by Sampson Weathers.

Notes for JOHN SANDERS:
From Yvonne Barrell:
His parents moved to Ind. when he ws about eighteen months old.
After he married Sarah, they went to Marion Co., Illinois and stayed there long enough for William, Elizabeth and John to be born there, before moving back to Orange County, Ind.  Evidently Thomas Elwood was born before they left. Indiana.

A story told by Elsa Willyard in a letter to Elsa Oldfield explained the move back.
Evidently when they arrived in Illinois, Sarah was sitting in a rocking chair on the wagon, holding a baby, (must have been Thomas Elwood).  The wagon hit a rock and tipped, throwing Sarah and the baby out.  Sarah was terrified that she had hurt the child and demanded that they move back because theis country was "too rough for her."  It must have taken a while to begin the move because three children were born before they moved back.

On 1860 census for Orange County, Ind. there is a child Margaret Hollowell age 13, b. Ind.

They lived near Valeene, Ind., on a farm which joined what is now (1915) known the "George Wynich Farm" on the Valeene to Marengo Road.

Children of SARAH COPPLE and JOHN SANDERS are:
    i.    THOMAS ELWOOD6 SANDERS, b. November 05, 1830, Valeen, Orange Co., Indiana; d. April 29, 1910, Southeast Twp, Orange Co., Indiana; m. AMERICA MAXEDON, September 26, 1852, Orange County, Indiana; b. May 11, 1834, Jasper DuBois Co., Indiana; d. December 06, 1914, Orange County, Indiana.

27.  RICHARD5 SANDERS (HANNAH4 COPPLE, JACOB PETER3, NICHOLAS2, MICHAEL1) was born December 15, 1824 in Orange County, Indiana, and died August 29, 1873 in Wayne County, Illinois.  He married MARGARET MELINDA FAULKNER October 12, 1848 in Orange County, Indiana.  She was born September 22, 1828 in Green Co., Kentucky, and died August 31, 1891 in Wayne Co., Illinois.

Notes for RICHARD SANDERS:
Information from the 1994 Sanders family reunion booklet:  Richard
Sanders pioneered into Wayne County, IL during the time of the civil
war.  He had sold his land in Orange Co., IN, and with his double
brother-in-law, Warren Faulkner, followed other family members to the
area around Irvington, IL.  While living at Irvington, they heard of
land opportunities in western Wayne County.  Richard's family at the
time included five or six children and later increased to eleven.
Richard and Warren looked over the land near Keenes in Wayne County,
picked a homesite and built what was called a "Half-faced camp"  for
temporary living quarters.  A two-story log house was built against a
temporary lean-to or shed which would be used for storage.  Richard was
a barrel maker and the land he selected had an abundance of white oak,
walnut and other hardwoods.  The logs used in the house were long wide
white oak and the same for a large log barn and crib, both covered with
clapboard shingles.  Warren located one quarter mile south of Richard in
chiefly prairie land, a part of what was known as "Six Mile Prairie".
They then went back to Irvington to close their business and get their
families.  Before leaving the family west of Keenes with whom they had
been staying, they left $400 in gold with them for safekeeping, tucked
away in a featherbed.  It was to be used to help pay for the land which
is believed to have cost $4 per acre.
Their chief problem was making a living.  There was little or no outlet
for selling excess products such as livestock because there were no
railroads or available markets of any kind.  Neighbors bartered their
products with each other.  Richard was fortunate and made good barrels,
kegs, etc., for both wet and dry products.  He even found a flag or
plant in the Skillet Fork bottoms that he placed between the white oak
staves of barrels to keep them from becoming leaky.
Richard and Margaret were charter members of the Six Mile Baptist
Church.  Richard died in 1873 at the age of 47.  He is buried in Bruce
Cemetery in Wayne County, near Keenes.
