Ancestry of the Randolph Emigrants to the American Colony of Virginia

The name of Randolph was widely scattered through in the British Isles early in the history of that area.  The name was well known in Scotland as early as the days of King Robert Bruce.  Among the earliest Randolphs in Scottish history is Thomas Randolph, Lord of Stratnith.  He married Lady Isabel Bruce, sister of King Robert Bruce.  His son, Sir Thomas Randolph, was first Earl of Moray.  His wife was Isabel Stewart, daughter of Sir John Stewart of Bonkle.  Sir Thomas Randoph's son, Thomas Randolph, 2nd Earl of Moray was killed in the Battle of Dupplin on August 12, 1332.  The title passed to his brother, John Randolph, who became the 3rd Earl of Moray.  John Randolph married his cousin, Isabel Stewart, the daughter of Sir Alexander Stewart of Bonkle.  They had no children.  The title was assumed by John Randolph's sister, Black Agnes Randolph, upon his death.  Her marriage to Patrick, Earl of  Dunbar took the title away from the Randolph family.
The name of Randolph was also found in that part of the British Isles known as England at almost the same time as it was found in Scotland.  There is no absolute proof that the two families were related but it is reasonable to assume that they were.   Consequently, it is quite difficult to determine the exact paternal ancestor from whom the Randolph emigrants, to the American Colony of Virginia, were descended.  However it seems to be agreed by most writers concerning this family that the name can be definitely traced to Richard Randolph of Hams, Sussex, England.  Who his parents were is lost in the pages of history, but through the ancestry of his son, William, the maternal ancestors of the Randolph family is found Henry de Bohun, 1rst Earl of Hereford.  Therefore, the history of the Randolph maternal ancestors will begin with Henry de Bohun.

The de Bohun Line
When the revolting barons forced King John of England to meet with them at Runnymede in June of 1215 to discuss grievances, Henry de Bohun was present.  The final Charter was signed on 15 June 1215, and among those who signed as a surety was Henry de Bohun.
The de Bohun line continued to play an important part in English affairs through many generations.  The family was a prominent one and intermarried with the highest ranking families of England.  Henry de Bohun VIII, the 4th Earl of Hereford, 3rd Earl of Essex and Constable of England, married Elizabeth Plantaganet, daughter of Edward I, King of England.  Most of the de Bohun men held various titles and many of their descendants  were Knights of the Garter.  The line descended to the Randolphs through Elizabeth de Bohun whose descendant married William Randolph of Little Haughton, Northamptshire and thuse became a maternal ancestor of the Randolph men who were emigrants to the American Colony of Virginia.
The following is from the book, "The Ancestors and Descendants of John W. Randolph of Pope County, Illinois"  written by my husband's relative, Alan R. Edwards:

The Paternal Ancestry of the Randolph Emigrants
to the American Colony of Virginia

The first Randolph emigrants to the Colony of Virginia originates from the family in England.  The parents of the first member of this family are unknown at this time, but it is reasonable to assume that they were of the same general family group found in England and Scotland.  The Randolph family in the American Colony of Virginia originated with two men, Henry Randolph of  Henrico and his nephew, William Randolph of Turkey Island.  The first definitely known ancestor was Robert or Richard Randolph, Gentleman, of Ham Sussex, England, and therefore; the family tree will begin with him.  Note: All of the names, dates and notations of this family have been authenticated and were found among the official documents filed in County Court records, United States records, old family Bibles, or were given to me by persons who had personal knowledge of their accurace.  Therefore, let us now proceed to trace the ancestry of this family from Henry Randolph of Henrico down to the present.

William Randolph was inoilved in a  number of real estate transactions.  Some of these were disputed.  In 1779 he was named in a chancery suit brought by his brother John, who claimed that William was trying to sell property that was adjacent to his but not legally his to sell.  William claimed that this was all part of the Rich Neck bequest.  William lost.  He was named in a number of other suits brought by various family moved to Sullivan County, North Carolina (became Tennessee in 1796).  There is a suggestion that this move may have been influenced by all the litigation as at least two suits were dismissed because he had left the state.
After William's death his wife, Miriam Ann moved to Warren County, Tennessee and lived with her daughter, Mahala Conley.  Miriam died about 1814 and is buried in an unmarked grave in the Cumberland Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Warren County, TN.

Notes for LOGAN RANDOLPH:
LOGAN RANDOLPH.  It has been truly said that the farmers are the bone and sinew of the country's prosperity, and in no land is that fact more apparent than in this glorious home of liberty.  They are indeed an important factor in the stability and steadfastness which have made this Republic of so much more importance in the world than her sister Republic, France.  We see in our subject a worthy example of those who in this walk of life haave done so much, and indeed the greater part, towards strengthening the bulwarks of the Nation and advancing her prosperity.  Soon after the war, Mr. Randolph purchased a tract of eighty acres of land in Pope County, on section 27, township 13, range 5.  To this original purchase as a nucleus he has added as the years passed, until his farm now numbers four hundred acres all in a body.
Logan Randolph was born in Wilson County, Tenn., July 30, 1842, and was the son of Samuel Richard and Mary (McCroy) Randolph, who were likewise natives of the same State.  The paternal grandparents of our subject, John and Mary Ann Randolph, were among the first settlers of Pope County.  The former was a farmer by occupation, and owned large tracts of land in this locality, where his death occurred about the year 1848.  Samuel Richard Randolph emigrated to Illinois with his father, and settled on a farm near the latter's home.  He was married in Tennessee, and with his wife made the journey to Illinois in wagons, taking about three weeks to cover the distance.  They led a gypsy life, cooking and camping out on the way, and crossing the Ohio River at the village of Golconda, Illinois.  Mr. Randolph was numbered among the enterprising farmers and stock raisers of the county, where he resided until the winter of 1876, when he was called to the home beyond.
Our subject was the only child of Samuel Richard Randolph and Mary McCroy, and remained on the old homestead until sixteen years of age.  He was entirely without school privileges, but learned to read and write while in the army.  He has always made the most of what advantages were at his command, and through his observation and wise system of reading has become conversant with all essential matters occupying the minds of the average citizen of today.  When only eighteen years of age he enlisted as a private soldier in Co. A, One Hundred and Twentieth Illinois Infantry.   With his regiment he took an active part in many important battles of the war, among which were the siege and the surrender of Vicksburg, and the battles of Guntown (Miss.) and of East Port, in the same State.  He recieved an honorable discharge at Memphis, Tenn., September 16, 1865, having been in active service for three years.  Owing to the injuries to his health from which he still suffers.
In this township, February 14, 1867, Mr. Randolph married Miss Sarah E. Abbott, who was born on the same farm where she is still living, on January 30, 1852.  Her father, who was prosperous farmer and a respected citizen of this township for a number of years, was born in Tennessee.  Her mother, a native of Illinois, in the early days carded, wove and spun the cloth from which she constructed the garments for the whole family.  Mr. and Mrs. Randolph had ten children.  Our subject, who is liberal in his religious views, is not a member of any denomination, but socially holds membership with Temple Hill Lodge No. 701, A.F. & A.M.  He is a School Director, in which position he has served faithfully for nine years, and politically, votes in favor of the Democracy.

The following information was taken from Allan R. Edwards book of 1959.

When Logan Randolph's stepmother, Elinda Hayes, was divorced by Samuel R. Randolph, Logan went to live with Henderson Abbott.  He regarded this man so highly that he named his first son in memory of him.  Logan also married Henderson Abbott's only child.
Logan Randolph was a prosperous land owner of more than 400 acres of good farm land in Pope County, Ill.  He was active in civic affairs and took particular interest in Public School work.  Like many of his cousins, he enlisted at Golconda, Illinois on August 5, 1862 in Company A, 120th Illinois Volunteer Infantry for duty in the Union Army in the War between the States.  He was mustered out at Memphis, Tennessee on September 10, 1865 in the grade of Corporal with a permanent injury incurred in battle.  He was a pensioner for the balance of his life.  He is buried in the city Cemetery at Creal Springs, Illinois.

Sarah Ellen Abbott was the daughter and only child of Henderson Abbott and Mary Jane Scott Abbott.  Her mother was the daughter of Isaac Scott and granddaughter of Robert Scott, both of the state of North Carolina.  Robert Scott was the son of James Scott of Caswell County, North Carolina.  Sarah Ellen Abbott's father was the son of Sterling Abbott of Tennessee. Henderson Abbott, like many of the men of Southern Illinois, served in the War between the States in Company K, 56th Regiment of Illinois Volunteers.  Henderson Abbott died on April 20, 1863.  His widow afterwards married David Stafford of Virginia on March 3, 1864.  Henderson Abbott is buried in Shedville Cemetery west of Golconda, Illinois.  Sarah Ellen Abbott Randolph is buried in the City Cemetery at Creal Springs, Illinois.
