15th | US Fans give Insurrection the thumbs up! |
Loads
of positive reviews have been posted on the net over the weekend
by fans who have seen the new film.
The general take seems to be that while it may not be quite as good as First Contact, it really captures the spirit of the TNG series and the camaraderie amongst the crew. The story also returns to Gene Roddenberry's vision of what Star Trek was all about and has a strong moralistic theme. Fans think the humour aspect works well and that the lighter tone of the film makes it a 'feel good' movie. Visit Dark Horizons to read lots of those fan reviews. Patrick at the London Premiere tonight Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes, F Murray Abraham and Rick Berman will be in London tonight to attend the European Premiere of STAR TREK: INSURRECTION at the Empire, Leicester Square. UIP will be covering this event live on the internet in a very unique way. Combining forces with UFP CON, UIP and GMS have created the first Cyber Con. For further information visit:

14th | Insurrection pulls in the crowds! |
Report from Variety.com 'Insurrection' warps up estimated $22.4 million Paramount’s “Star Trek: Insurrection” rocketed to a studio-estimated $22.4 million debut, the third highest opening in the space franchise’s19-year history on the big screen. But while the sci-fi sequel is only the fifth December release ever to top $20 million, it landed somewhat short of studio expectations, which were fueled by extremely promising pre-opening tracking. Launching in 2,620 locations, “Star Trek: Insurrection” managed a solid $8,550 per screen average in its freshman frame. As is typical for “Star Trek” pics, attendance was off about 16% Saturday compared to Friday, when hardcoreTrekkies thronged megaplexes. The previous “Star Trek” sequel, “First Contact,” debuted to $30.7 million on Nov. 22,1996, eventually amassing a $92 million cume. But “Insurrection’s” debut appears to be more in line with that of the seventh installment, “Star Trek: Generations” which bowed to $23.1 million in Nov. 18, 1994, and finished at $75.7 million. On the plus side, “Insurrection” will face little direct competition for its core male audience of sci-fi action fans in the coming weeks, when more female and date-driven pics like “You’ve Got Mail,” “Stepmom” and “Patch Adams” enter the marketplace. And given the pic’s moderate budget of just under $60 million — and the franchise’s growing appeal overseas — “Insurrection” looks likely to continue “Star Trek’s” nearly two-decade winning streak. |
