 W 2-1 vs. Wings
Murphy on the p.p for the Wings and Berezin on the p.p ( via a nice assist from Osgoode!)  for the Leafs. McCauley via a nice pass from Domi gives the Leafs the lead going into the 3rd period.  McCauley's goal stands up as the Leafs win their last meeting ever vs. the Red Wings at M.L.G.  - Cujo easily the first star as he faced almost 40 shots.
Oct. 13 W 3-2 vs. Oilers  Great game!  Started out kind of slow in the first period but picked up momentum in the second and third periods!  Nice goals from Sundin (2) and Valk for the win.  Leafs first win in Edmonton since March 30, 1996!!!  Cujo kept the Leafs in it but the Leafs had some great chances in the third which led to Sundin eventually getting the game winner.
Oct. 16 W 7-3 vs. Flames Thomas, Berezin and Johnson with a pair, in the first period to give the Leafs a 4-0 lead!  Flames score two straight in the second to mount a small comeback making it 4-2.  Domi scores for the Leafs (awesome setup from Jason Smith) to make it 5-2 going into the third. Flames mount mini comeback in third but goals by D. King and McCauley put it out of reach.
Oct. 17 L 4-1 vs. Canucks Quinn gets a nice cheer from the crowd for his return to Vancouver.  Cote scores early for the Leafs, Ohlund replies for the Canucks late in the period on the PP.  Messier on the PP late in the second to give the Canucks the lead.  Bertuzzi and May in the third to give the Canucks the win.  Leafs should have had this one, they outshot the Canucks by a large margin.  Snow was the difference.
Oct. 19 T 2-2 vs. Predators Missed the game, taped it and watched most of it on FF.  Nice fight between Domi and Cote in the first.  Berezin scores a nice goal to give the Leafs the lead.  With the Leafs down 2-1, Sullivan made a great play behind the net to feed Modin for a goal to tie it up at 2-2 and that's how it ended.   It was Potsi's first game as a bud and one I'm sure he'd like to forget.  He was in the penalty box for the first Nashville goal and fell down (this looked brutal) on the second Nashville goal.  Hopefully he can rebound.  Leafs should have had this game and the last game (vs. Canucks) <sigh!>.  The good news is that the Habs lost tonight. :)
Oct. 23 W 5-3 vs. Wings A very entertaining game.  Wings came close in the third making it 4-3 but Berezin with a great shot late in the third gave the Leafs the needed insurance goal (his second of the game).

Great first period!  Leafs get two penalties in about the first five minutes of the game but kill them both - Cujo with several huge saves.  Sundin gets in alone on Hodson (nice assist from Thomas) and Sundin roofs it on the backhand for a highlite reel goal!!!  End to end action, both goalies looking good.  Berezin scores (he had about 4 great scoring chances in the period) by beating two Wing defenders (Lidstrom and Murphy!) and got his own rebound.  Great first period of action.  Second Period - early the Leafs are all over the Wings.  On the PP, Kaberle scores his first NHL goal on a one timer from the point!  Wings thought they had scored soon after that but the goal was called back as Yzerman was in the crease (hilarious replay on this as Yzerman looks down at his feet as the puck goes in and tries to get out of the crease) Shanahan eventually scores for the Wings.  Thomas scores for the Leafs with less than a minute left in the second period!  Wings come back to make it 4-3 in the third but Berezin answers for the Leafs.  Again, great game - to think it was almost not televised :)

Oct. 24 W  6-4 vs. Penguins Sundin, Korolev, D. King, Kaberle, Modin, and  K. King (e.n.). for the Leafs.  Potvin got the start for the Leafs and played very well.  Kaberle made up for a horrible give away that led to a Penguins goal by scoring to make it 5-3 Leafs.  (the second night in a row Kaberle has scored on a nice one-timer).  Good game but no where near as exciting as last nights game vs. the Wings.  However, Leafs are now 5-1-1 very impressive!
Oct. 26 L 2-0 vs. Penguins Forget that impressive bit (see above).  Actually I missed this entire game but taped it.  If there was anything interesting or noteworthy I'll post it here tomorrow.
Oct. 30 L 4-1 vs. Sabres Strange game!  Leafs actually outshot the Sabres and out chanced them in the first but were down 3-0 at the buzzer.  Sabres actually put the puck in the net 5 times in the first with 2 being disallowed (one well after the whistle and one because of a crease violation).  Some real good hits in the first.  Domi and Ray went twice - the second fight being much better.  Down 4 goals going into the third.....vs. Hasek...good luck :(  Of course I'll watch the rest of the game as these two teams meet tomorrow at MLG.  Interesting 3rd period - Johnson scores for the Leafs on a wild play a near two-line pass by Cujo puts Johnson alone but Hasek comes out to the blueline to challenge...but  Johnson puts it away.   Barnaby went semi-nuts and the linesman did a great job (haven't seen anything like that seen Bonney manhandled Kordic!).  Barnaby even grabbed the Gatorade / Poweraid (whatever) pitcher and tossed it aside while going to the dressing room.  Domi and Ray wanted to go again but didn't - they'll likely go tomorrow....maybe twice - they seem to love to fight each other.  One of the most entertaining Leaf games I've seen where they've lost (playoffs excluded).  Note:  They play each other tomorrow.  Potvin may start....perhaps a different forward for the Leafs as Berezin was injured in the first on a hit by Shannon.  Who knows what Quinn has in store.  He has a few hours to think about it as the Leafs travel up the Q.E.W. home.
Oct. 31 L 6-3 vs.  Sabres. Leafs were down 3-0 early in the second but got goals from Sullivan (nice assist from Domi), Johnson (reviewed but allowed), and Korolev to tie it 3-3.  Sabres come back with 3 straight goals (one an e.n.).   Game Notes:  Potvin and Hasek are the goalies.  K. King and Barnaby  go twice - King wins both fights.  Chippy game.  Both Potvin and Joseph didn't look impressive in the home and home Sabres series.  Ray vs. Domi round 3 didn't happen.  Leaf special teams really suck - nobody will stand in front of the net on the power play and their penalty killing also sucks.  Entertaining game but if they keep losing I'm really going to get pissed off.  Also Sullivan played tonight and looked good.  So did Eakins....looked bad on one goal, but threw hits, took hits and got in a fight.  Leafs do the home and home thing with the Sabres again on November 20 and 21.
Nov. 4.  W 3-0 vs. Aves  Sullivan beats Roy high glove hand to give the Leafs the 1-0 lead.  Thomas follows with a similar goal (high glove side).  After that goal Odjers wanted to fight Domi....who eventually agreed.  Then K. King  got in a fight with De vries - two fights at once.  Then Smith and Corbet go!  Everyone in the secondary fights get tossed (King and Smith are gone).  Sundin scores to get the Leafs up 3-0, Sundin batted it in just under the crossbar - reviewed but allowed.  Overall very good game.  Cujo gets the shutout, some nice plays, lots of great hits, some scraps and the win :)
Nov. 5. L 4-1 vs. Bruins This sucks. Leafs outshoot the Bruins 15-6 in the first but are down 1-0 thanks to a great goal by Samsanov and good net work by Dafoe.  Leafs are outshot and outplayed by the Bruins in the second who score twice.  Domi and Baumgartner fight - twice!  The first one reminded me of a battle they had years ago when Baumer was an Islander and Domi was a Ranger.  Aside from the fights this was not an entertaining period.....unless you're a Bruin fan. D. King actually scores on the PP for the Leafs in the third but they still lose.  Powerplay and Penalty killing still sucks.  Totally different team from the team that played last night vs. the Aves even though the exact same players were dressed.  Leafs seem to have trouble beating teams in the east.  Nuff said.
Nov. 7 T 6-6 Vs. Rangers First period.  D. King for the Leafs and Harvey for the Rangers.   Second:  Korolev for the Leafs on a setup (and a lot of hard work!) by Sullivan.  2-1.  Harvey replies for the Rangers 2-2.  Johnson for the Leafs on the backhand which, for a second, looked brilliant but the replay shows that Richter just missed it. 3-2.   Korolev gets his second of the night on some great work by Sundin and Thomas cycling the puck with Sundin attempting a couple of spin-o-ramas from behind the net.  Eventually Sundin gets it to the point for Karpovtsev - shoots, Korolev knocks in the rebound - 4-2.  Graves scores for the Rangers to make it 4-3.  5 goals in the second - still a boring game though...difficult to explain unless you're watching it.  Cujo isn't exactly sharp.....thought he should have had the Graves goal. Two Rangers score early in the third to make it 5-4 NY.  Thomas for the Leafs makes it 5-5....then Yushkevich makes it 6-5....over?  Nope, Rangers pull Cloutier (who replaced Richter at the start of the third) and Gretzky, (figures and is very fitting) scores the tie goal - the guy is awesome.   6-6 O.T. Solves nothing although Gretzky almost set up the winner with about 3 seconds left.   Excitement lacked in this game - even though 12 goals were scored.  The NHL brass should realize that goals don't make exciting games - intensity does.
Nov 9.  L 3-1 vs. Islanders Leafs outshoot the Islanders big time but still lose.  They can't seem to be the teams in the East. Not much to say about this game.  Salo was hot....but it seems every goalie is hot vs. the Leafs lately.
Nov. 11 W 3-2 vs. Oilers  Figures... Leafs get outshot and they win.  Oilers were all over the Leafs in the third period but couldn't get the tie goal.  Markov blocked three shots in the last minute and thirty seconds with the Leafs down a man (penalty) and with the extra Oiler on (goalie out).  Markov couldn't get to the bench for a change as the Oilers really pressed.  Good game, first period was a snoozer but things picked up after that. Oilers score first as Murray chips a shot over Cujo's head who had tried the poke check.  Oilers miss several chances but come very close.  Markov scores on a nice setup from Sundin.  McCauley scores, tipping a shot from the point by Cote.  Sullivan feeds Thomas on the PP (!!!!) for the Leafs third goal.  All goals scored in the second period, first period was a snoozer.  Oilers score one in the third to make it close - real close as they had several opportunities after that - but couldn't do it - Cujo was really hot (or lucky) in the 3rd.
Nov. 12 W 10-3 vs. Hawks. OH YAA!!!  I'm liking this! Just too many goals to comment on :)  Expect heads to roll in Chicago.
Nov. 14 W 2-1 vs. Senators. Thomas for the Leafs in the second period makes it 1-0.  K. King shorthanded for the Leafs to make it 2-0 in the third.  Leafs hang on for the win.  Key win against a divisional rival.  Notes:  Habs lost tonight  :)  Karpovtsev got injured tonight - wrist?  Too bad, he may have been having his best game as a Leaf.
Nov. 18  L 4-1  vs. Capitals.  Not surprising.....I can't remember the last time the Leafs won in Washington.  They're going to have to learn how to beat some of these eastern teams if they are going to amount to anything this year.  D. King with the lone Leaf goal.  Markov took a nasty highstick in the face courtesy of Zednik - I'll be very interested to see what suspension Campbell hands out for that one.
Nov. 20  L 4-1 vs. Sabres.  Brown, Grosek, Barnaby and Ward for the Sabres.  Modin tipping a Kaberle point shot for the Leafs.  Leafs were very non-physical (why?) vs. the Sabres.  They tried to skate with them and got burned.  We'll see what happens at M.L.G. tomorrow.
Nov. 21  W  2-1  vs. Sabres  Johnson and Korolev for the Leafs.  Domi was the first star.  We finally figure out how to beat Buffalo, tonights game was a lot grittier than the one last night.
Nov. 23 W 3-2 vs. Flames Thomas on the pp for the Leafs.  Bure on the pp (2 man advantage) for the Flames.  Stillman makes it 2-1 Flames in the second on the pp.  Leafs comeback to tie it up at 2: D. King with a nice tip in on a Tremblay point shot on the pp.  Cote with a nice backhand roofs the puck to score the lone goal of the 3rd period.  Leafs are now 8-1-1 vs. the Western Conf.
Nov. 25  W 5-1 vs. Canucks Missed the game....had a meeting.  But I really like the result (taped the game of course).  I heard Cujo kept the Leafs in it during the first period, and subsequently Cujo was the first star.  We're almost into December and the Leafs are a top the league!!!!  Plus we're still sitting on a commodity known as "The Cat".
Nov. 27 L 4-3 vs. Flyers Missed the game....had to work.  Exciting game (taped the game of course).  A few disturbing notes:  first on the Brindamour goal, the Leafs were in the late stages of a pp and I didn't hear Cujo banging his stick on the ice as he should to warn the Leafs the penalized player was about to return to the ice (I'm not saying he didn't, I'm saying I couldn't hear it),   then Kerry Fraser got in the way of McCauley back-checking the passer!!!!  Fraser is the anti-Leaf!   On two other goals (one by Lindros one by LeClair) - both plays Jason Smith either fell or was pushed to the ice.  On the Lindros goal Jones pushed him to the ice (yeah Keith Jones!) and on the other (which may have been offside) he bounced off LeClair and fell allowing LeClair to circle the net and score.  This is disturbing because usually Smith is drilling guys to the ice, not picking himself up off it.  He's been struggling of late -the Leafs better figure out what is wrong and fast.
Nov. 28  W 3-2 vs. Senators in O.T. Sens are up 2-0 heading into the first intermission.  Leafs get one back in the second period, Sullivan goes in on a breakaway and stops (looks as though the play has broken down), spins and  passes to D. King heading to the net and King buries it 2-1.  In the third Sundin sets up Thomas on a breakaway and he beats Rhodes with a backhand.  In O.T., on the pp, McCauley to the point, back to McCauley who finds D. King in the slot who fires a quick shot past Rhodes - Leafs win it.  Notes:  Jason Smith was scratched....obvsiously Quinn saw what I saw in the game vs. Philly (see above L 4-3 vs. Flyers).
Dec. 2 W 3-1 vs. Kings Berezin with two and Yushkevich with one.  All goals on the PowerPlay.  Leafs seventh straight home win, they haven't done that since 1993.  Sundin - three assists.
Dec. 5 W 4-3 vs. Habs in O.T Great game!  Leafs were down 3-2 late in the tird (goals by Markov and Yushkevich) when Domi tied it up on a rebound from a 2 on 1 with Hendrickson shooting the initial shot.  Huge goal - fans (Leaf fans) go crazy!  Kaberle scores on a point shot in O.T. for the win - huge win!  You'd think the Leafs just won the Cup and the Habs just lost it.  Cujo made the difference for the Leafs making several key saves.  Montreal actually should have had this one but lets face it, the Leafs are awesome :)  Some big hits from Kris King in this one.  Great post game interview with Tie Domi with Ron and Don....Domi was totally blown away by the events of the evening, if you saw the interview you know what I mean.
Dec. 7 L 6-2 vs. Rangers. Modin scores 25 seconds into the game but that was about it for the Leafs besides a goal from Berezin.  Leafs can't seem to beat the Rangers.  We'll see what / how they do Friday vs. the Hawks (looking for revenge) and the Flyers on Saturday.
Dec. 11 W 3-2 vs. Hawks  Markov (back spasms) and K. King (broken hand) are not in the lineup.  Warriner, McCauley and Sundin with the Leaf goals.  The big story in this one was the play of goaltender Glen Healy who was making his first NHL start this season.  Healy came up with several key saves throughout the entire game to not only keep the Leafs in it but give them the win.  Note:  Sundin and McCauley break long goaless streaks.
Dec. 12 L 3-0 vs. Flyers.  Sucks...not much else to say about this one....I was busy working on the rumours page though so feel free to check it out.
Dec. 16 W 5-2 vs. Coyotes. Missed the game, was at an x-mas party (they didn't have cable).  Good win for the Leafs though, Coyotes surrender a season high 5 goals.  Korolev with two.  Leafs were down 2-0 (so I hear) and obviously had a nice comeback.
Dec. 19 W 7-4 vs. Rangers. Gretzky's final game at M.L.G.  Healy gets the start and plays the entire game.  At one point the Leafs were up 7-1 in the 3rd.  Richter got pulled after the 7th goal.  Too many goals to rundown the scoring....I think Gretzky had 2 assists.
Dec. 21 W 7-1 vs. Penguins.  Penguins score first and the Leafs answer with goals by McCauley and Sundin - 2-1 Leafs at the end of the first period.   Leafs turn it on the rest of the way:  Smith, D. King, Johnson, Berezin and Sundin make it 7-1!!!  Of note:  Leafs entered the game with 98 gaols for and were likely the first team to hit 100 goals for.  Sundin injured Kasparitus with a knee (looked accidental) and Hendrickson fought Tyler Wright twice.  Also, Barrasso didn't come back out for the second period with an undisclosed injury, leaving Skudra to get shelled.  Wow - 14 G.F. in the last two games!
Dec. 23 L 5-1 vs. Stars.  Big reality check!  The Leafs prove once again that they have trouble beating teams that can keep their GAA down (Dallas, Boston, Buffalo).  Notes:  Domi injured his knee in a fight with Marshall - status unknown.  Modano had the hat trick despite being rocked by a great check by Yushkevich early in the game.  Leafs should learn from watching the tape of this game.... learn something.   Anyway I'm already concentrating on the Leaf - Hab game on Saturday.
Dec. 26 L 2-1 vs. Habs
Dec. 30 W 4-1 vs. Ducks  Domi on a nice wrap-around and Modin goes shelf where you keep the expensive Scotch :)  Kariya appeared to score in the first but it was called back as Teemu was obviously in the crease.  Second Period:  McCauley injures his knee - they're calling it a sprain at this time.  Tremblay scores on a 4 on 2 rush which was led by Smith and Tremblay!!!  Third Period:  Smith scores for the Leafs, Selanne for the Ducks.  Leafs end their 2 game losing streak.
Dec. 31 W 4-2 vs. Wings Leafs sweep the season series vs the Wings as Cujo steals one in the Moter City!  Forget the scoring for now, this game was about the ability of Cujo who stopped about 38 (?) shots and I think the Leafs only had 25 or so shots.  Also Kris King was back from his injury in this game and did an awesome job of hitting a couple of wings and really getting under the skin of Kocur and Lapointe which resulted in a couple of powerplays.  Thomas, Korolev, Modin and Derek King with the goals for the Leafs.  A great New Years present - sweeping the season series with the Wings 3-0 (that sounds so good). Happy New Year Leaf fans!
Jan 2. / 1999 L 5-2 vs. Caps Burtal effort. The Leafs always seem to find a way to lose to the Caps.  In the last 5 games the Leafs had the one good game vs. Anaheim and the rest they deserved to lose.  They stole the win New Years Eve vs. Detroit and I thought after that Quinn and co. would make some changes via call-ups or something but they didn't do a thing.  Cujo actually played quite well even though the game should have been 6-2 but Pivonka had his baby toe in the crease and the Leafs caught a break but couldn't take advantage.  Bellows got his 1000th point - good for him - I can't figure a more fitting place to get it than M.L.G.  This guy along with Yzerman and Gretzky stands out in my mind as a Leaf killer maybe even more so because he had such dominant years with the Stars  in Minny.  Why didn't the Leafs go after Bellows last year when he was wallowing in the German league playing for Berlin?!?!?  Who knows?  I wonder if we can convince Al Secord to lace em up again. ;)
Jan 4/99 W 5-4 vs. Lightning in O.T. Berezin, Sundin, Johnson, Thomas with the goals and Yushkevich (may be changed to Modin) with the O.T. winner. The first period of this game sucked, it was real bad.  The Leafs were down 3-0 part way in the second period but came back.  Wendel Clark had three assists in his final game at the Gardens.  Thomas had a goal, and assist and a fight.  Thomas had an ongoing rivalry with Tucker who bumped Sundin too hard in the second period so Thomas ran him into the boards.   It looked as though on the way to the box Tucker motioned to Thomas that he would break his nose next time (by moving his nose back and forth).  Sure enough Thomas and Tucker got into a scrap later - that Tucker sure can fight for a smaller player  - call it a draw but Thomas' still had his nose intact.  Eakins got into in later with Gratton - you gotta hand it to Eakins, he wants to be a regular.  Wild third period as the teams trade chances but the Leafs come up with the 4-4 tie going into O.T.  Great O.T. - why change it?  Leave it alone!  Yushkevich shoots from the point off the draw and it finds net (Modin may have tipped it).  Keys to this game are the Leafs fighting back from being down 3-0 (a year ago we would have called that quits) and guys (Thomas and Eakins) stepping up the rough play on a much bigger team especially when your two gun slingers are hurting (Domi / knee / King /hand, wrist).
Jan. 7/99 L 2-1 vs. Bruins The Leafs continue with poor play against teams in the East.  I missed most of this game but what I saw of it looked pretty boring.  They play each other again at MLG on Saturday, hopefully I'll catch that game.
Jan. 9/99 W 6-3 vs. Bruins Leafs traded Potvin today to the Islanders for Berard and the two teams flipped 6th round picks in this years entry draft - check the News and Rumours page for more details.

Game Notes:  Leafs are 0-2-0 vs. the Bruins this year.  First Period:  The Leafs get to Dafoe early with goals from  D. King and Korolev about 45 seconds apart.  Valk and Berezin score later in the period to make it 4-0 but Bates comes back with a goal for the Bruins (notes: after the 4th goal Dafoe was pulled in favour of Tallas). Second:  Thornton for the Bruins.  Third:  Leafs score a pair Bruins get one....nuff said, the Leafs finally get their first win this season vs. the Bruins.

Jan. 12/99 W 4-3 vs. Lightning. The Ice Palace - about half empty but plenty of Leaf fans and Canadians are in attendance. Almost a re-make of the Leaf-Lightning previous game.  Leafs are down 3-1 at the start of the third.   The game is really exciting at some points (due to lack of defensive play) and really boring at other parts.  I even caught myself check out the Geraldo Autobio on A&E as well as the Wings-Canadiens games on Sportsnet.  However, I stayed with the game in the third (good thing!).  The Lightning appear to score to make it 4-1 BUT Gratton had half a foot in the crease :)  Johnson scores his second of the night to make it 3-2.  A Tampa rush, Tremblay takes down the Lightning player with a leg trip (ala wrestling) - no call.  The Leafs rush back and Tremblay gets the pass......LE BUT!!!! (goal)!  Now we're tied at 3-3.  Sundin scores on the PP to make it 4-3 and that was it.  These games are snoozers sometimes and other parts are action packed!  The guy/gal working the sound/audio/dj at the Ice Palace was really good with an assortment of tunes from the metal and country genres and some cool movie quotes :) (bet you didn't expect that in this summary).  Anyway, this week would have been a great week to take a holiday in FLA - Leafs play the Panthers tomorrow night.
Jan. 13/99 T 3-3- vs. Panthers I turned this on in the third period and the Leafs were up 3-0.  Florida really took it to the Leafs in the third to get the tie.  In a sense the Leafs were lucky to get the tie but likely won't be happy with it.
Jan 16/99 W 4-3 vs. Flyers Very nice, the Leafs end Phiilly's 15 game unbeaten streak and end the the Flyers  4 (?) game shutout streak - 3 by Beezer.  Early it looked like it was going to be all Philly but the Leafs came back on goals by Sullivan and Berezin (both high glove side).   Sullivan with his second of the night tied it at 3-3 (again high glove side).   In the third period it was wide open!  Like a playoff game (Gregson really lost the ball out of his whistle).  With about 5 minutes left Warriner takes a shot that goes wide,  Beezer turns slowly and D. King gets his 16th of the season by one-timing the rebound off the boards.  Leafs are up 4-3 - The last 2 minutes were very exciting but the Leafs held on for the win.  Sullivan, Berezin and Warriner looked real good tonight.....I'm not just talking about Sullivan's two gaols, the guy played really well on the boards for the smallest player out there.  Interesting that in Sullivan's post game interview (well done) said that he was told to go five-hole on Beezer....glad he didn't.
Jan 18/99 L 4-2 vs. Hurricanes Leafs prove (again) that they have trouble knocking guys over in front of the net - Gary Roberts proved that tonight.
Jan 20/99 W 6-4  vs.  Dallas First: Reid on the PP for the Stars makes it 1-0.  Then with 3 seconds left in the period Berezin scores for the Leafs - about a minute after taking a wicked hit (or elbow) from Hatcher.  All  Stars in first....lucky to be tied.
Second: Sundin on the backhand, Korolev, Berard and Hull (punk) for the Stars (4-2 Leafs).
Third:  Dallas comes back with a couple of goals from Sydor but the Leafs counter with goals from Thomas and Sullivan to make it 6-4.
Jan 21/99 W 4-2 vs. Blues The good news is the Leafs get a win, the bad news is that Cujo got injured.  The good news is Cujo should be back after about a week, the bad news is that he'll likely miss the all-star game.  Jeff Reese (talk about flashbacks) played well.
ALL STAR GAME / BREAK
Jan 28/99 L 6-0 vs. Penguins. Missed the game....which may have been a good thing because this appears to have been a weeeaakk  effort by the Leafs getting only 21 shots.  Reese was in goal for the Leafs with Cujo still injured.  Skudra was in goal for the Pens - funny, this is his second shutout of the year - both vs. the Leafs.
Jan 30/99 W 5-3 vs. Caps It's about time we beat the Caps!
First:  Thomas on the PP makes it 1-0 Leafs.
Second:  Leafs explode for 3 goals in just under three minutes.  Sullivan (pp), Valk and Berezin to make it 4-0.
Third:  K. King and Ciccone get in a fight.  King landed some monster shots!  Everything was fine until Sundin took a kneeing penalty and then Valk took a penalty shortly after that.  The result:   the Caps score on the 2 man advantage, then on the one man advantage and then, later in the period at even strength to make it 4-3!!  Leafs manage to hang on and ice it with an empty net goal from Sundin.  Very entertaining game!
Feb. 2/99 W 3-0 vs. Lightning. Leaf scorers: Berard (pp), Berezin (pp) and Warriner.  Cujo gets the shutout, his second of the season.
Feb. 3/99 L 5-2 vs. Panthers. Weeeeeeaaaaaaaak!  Burke was hot in goal for Florida.  Jason Smith had a good game for the Leafs.  Nice(!?!?!?!?) call on the 4th Florida goal by Gregson.....what a knob.....
Feb. 6/99 W 3-2 vs. Devils Just got an icq reminding me to update this. Nothing like robbing the Devil!!!!
First: Mostly boring stuff - Jersey all over the Leafs and score a couple of goals.  Domi and Oliwa go at it!  Domi lands a couple of good lefts but then Oliwa comes back with a tonne of huge rights but Domi is in the crouched position with the left ready and pops Oliwa a couple of times to get him down.  Great scrap - great after scrap discussion between the two.  Before the end of the period Sullivan goes top shelf to make it 2-1.  Missed most of the second.  I guess Berezin (correct me if I'm wrong) scored to make it 2-2- and then Sullivan in the third - fairly late--- to make it 3-2 and get the win!  Cujo had about 39 saves for the Leafs who stole this one the road. :)
Feb. 10/99 L 6-5 vs. Hurricanes Very entertaining game.  Berezin had a hat-trick and Francis had 5 points for the Canes.  As entertaining as the game was the Leafs showed their inability to handle opposing big forwards around their own net.  The only d-man that hit a thing was Smith.  The other guys had trouble all night long.  Maybe Dryden will change his mind and go after a big defenceman.
Feb. 13/99 L 6-2 vs. Hawks. Last game at the Gardens!!  Rotten game (Leafs lost) pretty good closing ceremonies....don't know about $5000 for a gold ticket though!
Feb. 15/99 T 3-3- vs. Devils. We'll take the tie on the road I guess.  A couple of goals scored both on Cujo and Brodeur that either one of my dogs could have stopped.  Pretty good O.T. period.  McKay banged Berard around at the end of the game and Domi (on the bench) took offence and got into a big yapping match with McKay after the game, don't know what Domi said but it really seemed to get McKay upset.  Should make the next Devils - Leafs game interesting.
Feb. 17/99  O.T. W 3-2 vs. Sabres. A rare Leaf game on Sportsnet.  Missed the first period due to a meeting.   The rest of the game was great!  Domi and Sullivan scored for the Leafs and Domi had a good fight with Ray in the second period when the Leafs were up 2-0.   There were some great hits in this game, especially the Leafs ability to hit Peca: K. King, Smith and Domi all lined him up pretty good.  The Overtime was wide open and a great pass from Thomas to Sundin to the back of the net won it for the Leafs.  Great game with a playoff like atmosphere.  Sportsnet did a pretty good job covering the game.  They say this was the Leafs first win in 8 years in Buffalo!?!?!  Wow!  Lots of Leaf fans made the trip which made for a noisey crowd.
Feb. 20/99 O.T. W 3-2 vs. Canadiens. The first game at the Air Canada Center - CBC did televise this game.  Todd Warriner got the first goal ever at A.C.C. from D. King and Markov.  Sundin also scored for the Leafs but the Habs came back to make it 2-2.

Domi and Corson get in the first fight at the ACC.

In O.T.   - Kohn with an awesome pass to Thomas on the backhand puts it in!  Leafs win!  Leafs are awesome in O.T. this year!!

New Extreme Leaf URL

Feb. 22/99 L 4-3 vs. Capitals. Missed the game but watched the tape on FF.  The Leafs sure do have a tough time being able to beat the Caps....can't understand it.  Valk, Kohn (first NHL goal on a great feed from Sundin) and Johnson for the Leafs.   Berard went end to end in an Orr like rush and appeared to score - great play!  But it was called no goal - looks like a blown call :(
Feb. 24/99 T 2-2 vs. Hurricanes Pretty entertaining game tonight.  Leafs battle back from 2-1 to get the tie at the Hanger.  Sundin and McCauley (first game back since injury) get the Leaf goals.
Feb. 25/99 W 4-1 vs. Islanders Missed the game - no reason just sort of forgot it was on!  Anyway.....Goals:  Sundin, Berezin, Kaeberle and Domi.  Healy made 27 saves in goal for the Leafs.  McAllister - first scrap as a Leaf - looked like he destroyed Pilon - but I only caught the highlites.  Looked like an entertaining game, too bad I missed it.
Feb. 27/99 W 4-1 vs. Panthers Goals: McCauley, Johnson, Warriner and Korolev.  Entertaining game!  Note: new E.L.F. Url (again) click at the bottom of thepage to get there.
Mar. 3/99 L 5-2 vs. Devils. Leafs were up 2-0 thanks to goals by Berezin but the Devils came back while I was on the phone and out of the room :(  Devils score 5 unanswered goals - one e.n.  Cujo didn't look so hot handling the long shots.  Karpovtsev injured his foot and McCauley got stretchered off because his head hit the boards after a check.  the game wasn't that ugly though - Domi fought Odelien twice and King got in a scrap as well, but nothing too eventful.
Mar. 4/99 W 4-0 vs. Blues Leafs get only 9 shots on goal in this one!  They were outshot approx. 29-9, although the game did not seem lopsided at all.  Leaf scorers:  Sullivan, Sundin, Bohonas (just called up) and Valk.  Cujo gets the shutout and played much better (especially the long shots) tonight than he did last night.
Mar. 6/99 L 3-1 vs. Sens. Pretty entertaining game despite the loss.  The first 10 minutes were just like a playoff game - the crowd was really into it.  The Sens look like they are for real this year.
Mar. 8/99 L 3-2 vs. Rangers in O.T. Missed the game due to prior commitments.  Leafs lose in O.T. - they don't usually do that.  Rangers are looking good since Gretzky got hurt (?!?) - Nedved is is really playing well of late.  Healy played net for the Leafs.  Johnson and D. King with the Leaf goals.
Mar. 9/99 W 6-1 vs. Lightning Believe it or not the Lightning outshot Toronto in this one 41- - 40.  The Leafs sweep the season series with Tampa 4 games to 0.  Goals for the Leafs: Bohonos, Domi, Berezin, Berezin (yes again), Sundin and Johnson.  Leafs were up 4-0 at the end of the first and the game was pretty boring after that.  Cujo stopped Richer on a couple of breakways and was very sharp throughout the game.  Next stop - Long Island.
Mar. 11/99 W 2-1 vs. Isles Missed the first period due to prior commitments.  Leafs are outshot badly (42-21 or soemthing like that).  Berezin scores - his 27th, a career high.  D. King with the other goal for the Leafs.  Cujo steals one on the Island!  Sundin proves he learned more than scoring in the Swedish elite league by participating in some great hacking and slashing matches with Jonnson - quite amusing . :)  Next stop - Montreal!!!
Mar. 13/99 L 2-1 vs. Canadiens I almost don't even want to discuss the bullshit that took place in the last two minutes of this one!!!  Granted the Leafs played poorly in the first two periods...but they came back in the third.  Cujo makes some awesome saves in the first period.  The second Montreal goal looked like a hand pass to me(!) - but we'll let that slide since it is minor compared to the rest of the bs.  Late in the third the Leafs scores and the goal is called back on video review - don't know why as it looked like a good goal.  Cherry said after the game he predicted it would be called back because the game was in Montreal (!!!!).  Then (as if that can be topped) Berard breaks in on goal as Wienrich falls and throws his stick - NO CALL!!!!  Man.....as soons as the game started and I saw that Fraser was reffing I thought "Oh-uh, could be a long night..."     Ya,  I still remember us getting screwed in LA one night via a Gretzky highstick - thanks for that one Fraser.

Anyway - the Leafs Powerplay was brutal - really brutal.  The Leafs were also very poor on the faceoffs and of course the officiating was brutal (Ya, Fraser & co. also missed a highstick on Sullivan).  Nuff said, if these two teams ever meet  in the playoffs I'll likely have a heart attack watching the game :|

Mar. 17/99 L 4-1 vs. Bruins. Brutal.  Tied 1-1 in the 3rd period but the Bruins still manage to bury the Leafs.
Mar 20/99 W 3-1 vs. Devils. Big win for the Leafs who have looked weak lately.  Modin, Sullivan and Warriner with the Leaf goals.  Game Notes:  Macallister looked real good in a fight with Oliwa.  Holik got a 5 minute major and a game misconduct for a slash on Korolev, you don't see that call made often enough.  Brodeur actually played quite well - stoppoing a couple of breakaways.  This may have been a case of the Devils playing brutal and not so much as the Leafs playing well.
Mar. 22/99 L 3-1 vs. Flyers. Missed the game due to prior commitments.  Sundin scored a nice goal but obviously it was not enough.  No trades yet.  Keep an eye on the Rumours page for any trades and check back often between now and the deadline at 3:00 p.m tomorrow.
Mar. 24/99 L 8-5 vs. Sharks The Leafs looked real bad in their own zone in this game.  At one point in the third period it was 7-2 but the Leafs scored three late goals to at least try and start a comeback and make the final score look not as bad as it was.
Mar. 26/99 W 7-2 vs. Hurricanes Good stuff!  Modin and Thomas each had a pair.  Cujo had some great saves in this game, the play wasn't as lopsided as the score would seem to indicate, the Leafs just managed to bury most of their chances.
Mar. 27/99 T 2-2 vs. Bruins. The Burins tend to check the opposition to death.  Watching them is like watching the Devils of three years ago.  The first two and a half periods were a snoozer due to the Bruins tight checking and up 2-0.    With about 7 minutes left in the 3rd period the Domi-Warriner-K. King line finally get a shift.  The fans really start booing as the Bruins check - this seems to inspire the line as King and Domi really started hammering guys into the boards.   Domi lost his helmet and later made what looked to be an on the tape, between the legs, blind pass - the fans start cheering - they went from booing to cheering in one shift!  The following shifts all seemed more enthusiastic with Berezin getting a goal with about 7 minutes left to make it 2-1.   With about a minute left Cujo makes an awesome save on Wilson, D. King rushes the puck out but gets hammered on the boards by Wilson but gets the puck in! (awesome play)   Cujo heads to the bench on the fly for the extra attacker, the puck comes out in front of the Bruins net and Markov knocks it in!!  Nothing in O.T.  but the turning point had to be that King-Warriner-Domi shift.  The first 2 and a half periods were really boring but the last 10 minutes made this game worth watching.
Mar 31/99  W 6-5 vs. Canucks Leafs win a close one in Vancouver.  Leafs were actually up 5-2 in the third period but the Canucks rallied to make a game of it.  Thomas and Perreault each scored twice while Sullivan and Markov added singles.  Notes:  Healy played the entire game but was not sharp.  This will allow Quinn to dodge a political bullet and start Cujo in the next two games vs. Edmonton and Calgary (both are in a playoff race and facing a backup would make the Leafs look bad).  The scoreboard at GM Place was making a strange high pitch noise at points during the game which was a real pain.
April 1/99 W 5-1 vs. Oilers  1st: Berezin, Sullivan and Berezin again with the Leaf goals.  Berezin becomes T.O's first 30 goal scorer this season.
3rd. Thomas on a one-timer that was nostalgic to say the least and Berezin yet again for the 5-0 lead and the hat trick.  Former Leaf Jason Smith scores for the Oilers to make it 5-1.  Some good hits in this game especially by the Leaf D.  Karpovtsev blocked a tonne of shots and Yushkevich took a tonne of hits.  Both Kaberle and Markov destroyed Edmonton's tough guy Laraque with solid checks.  Very entertaining game.
April 3/99 W 5-1 vs. Flames Sundin with two back-handers (unbelievable), Berezin with two and Karpovtsev with one to give the Leafs a 5-1 -win.  Leafs sweep the 3 game trip in Canada's west (been awhile, if ever, since I've said that!!!) Leafs have a shot at becoming the first ever Leaf team to get 100 points in a season.  We're playoff bound for sure likely to face Philly or Pittsburgh in the first round.
April 6/99 T 2-2 vs. Blues Great game!  I think I've seen more great Leaf games this year than the previous three years combined.  Leafs look pathetic in the first 6 or 7 minutes giving up at least 4 two on ones and got burned by the Blues on two of them.  Leafs are a different team in the second period, blasting shots at Fuhr but he doesn't allow a goal.  2-0 heading into the third.  Sundin scores early in the period, nice shot but Fuhr missed that one.  Then they break in, Gretzky drops to Kurri over to Coffey and in the net!....whoops, I mean Johnson drops to Sullivan over to Berard and in the net ( yes that goal was awesome). O.T. solves nothing but who cares?  It was a great O.T - very entertaining (I think they should keep the 5 min. O.T. and NOT go to shootout).  Geat game as things get interesting in the east with Boston winning and Philly losing (with Lindros out for the reg. season for sure).  I think Boston is hot and that it may be the Flyers or Sabres that end up in 8th place.
April 7/99 W 4-2 vs. Sens. Perreault, Perreault, Perreault, Perreault!!!   He gets four to secure Quinn's 400th career win as a coach (only 12 others have done it).  The Leafs and Sens go at it again tomorrow night - should be interesting.  Who the Leafs play in the first round is a toss up: Pens, Flyers, Sabres or Bruins.  Looks like Scott's playoff parties will be a go for at least the first round.
April 8/99 L 3-1 vs. Sens Missed the game but heard it was pretty good.  Berezin's lone Leaf goal was a classic (caught the highlites).....not too concerned about this game as I'm gearing up for the playoffs.
April 10/99 W 9-1 vs. Panthers  Leafs destroy the Panthers!  Sullivan with 4 goals, Thomas with 5 points (goal and four assists - three assists in one period ties a Leaf record).  Sullivan becomes the Leafs sixth 20 goal scorer this year.  Burke started but got chased and McLean faired no better.  Healy got the start for the Leafs - and the win.  Really getting psyched for the playoffs this year.
April 14/99 W 3-2 in O.T. vs. Islanders Joined the game in progress in the third with the Leafs down 2-1.  Modin makes a great defensive play on the rush and results in Thomas to Sundin for a goal to tie it at 2!   Leaf go to O.T. - Berard gets the feed and scores for the Leafs 45th win of the season - a new team record for wins!!!!  Potvin (in goal for the Isles) leaves in a big hurry, too bad, he played awesome - about 35 saves!  Cujo gets his 35th win of the season - a new record for Leaf goalie wins in a season surpassing the old record of 34 wins by Palmateer and Bower.  Valk, Sundin and Berard with the scoring for the Leafs.  Leafs do a draw for players game jerseys for fans at the end of the game - nice touch.
April 17/99 L 3-2 vs. Habs Damn!  I hate losing to the Habs...but at least they will be hitting the golf course or the fishing holes and we're going to the playoffs.  I'll start a new Leaf Chart for Round one of the Playoffs, keep an eye out here (I'll add the link later) or the Leaf Fanatic Homepage or my Personal Page.  It looks as though the Leafs will play either Philly or Boston depending on what happens Sunday. It's a toss up - I fear both teams as the Leafs have trouble with both, but I'd rather have Philly, Boston is red hot right now and I think they have stronger goaltending. It's amazing how things change, a week and a half ago it looked like the Leafs would play Pittsburgh but it looks like the Pens will  end up last.
