Directions, Part A: Carefully read and study Section M under Important Things to Remember and Related Words in The Little Book. Then, answer the questions below. Also use the Glossary.
- Political parties are not a part of the U.S. Constitution, but they began when the constitution was being debated. People such as George Washington warned against political parties because they believed they were selfish and dangerous. What is a political party?
- Before the microphone, radio, and television, candidates would make speeches to people willing to listen. To be seen and heard, they stood on platforms made from wood planks and raised off the ground. There, the candidate would explain to the public where he stood on the issues of the day. Today we continue to use the words platform and plank in politics. What is a platform and a plank?
- What is the main goal of the Democratic and Republican party?
- What is the difference between Democrat's and Republican's view on the role of government in solving our social and economic problems?
- What role do political parties play in elections?
- What is a primary election?
- How do Democrats and Republicans select a candidate for President in an election year?
Directions, Part B: Democrats are usually liberal. Republicans are usually conservative. Read the definition of the words conservative, liberal, and moderate in the Glossary. Then, read the phrases below and decide if they are characteristics of liberals (L), conservatives (C), or moderates (M).
