    Roland U 220 Sound Module



    It's important to remember that the U220 is multi-timbural - it's really six synthesizers in one, not counting the drum pages. I have bypassed the drum pages in this tutorial because I have bypassed the drum pages in my usage of the thing (!), so if you're looking for that kind of info, you'll have to look elsewhere.

    It's best to think of the U220 as six different instruments, and that's how Roland has set it up. Anyway, here's some stuff that might be of help -

    To write a patch, press "data", then strike cursor left button until the word "write" is blinking, then press enter. Scroll left again until "patch" is blinking. press enter. Scroll left and choose correct patch to copy to with up/down buttons. Then press enter and it will say "sure?" in lower left corner. Press value up button and it will say "function completed".

    In main menu, cursor left/right brings you to different functions, and "part/inst." selects which of the 6 sections you want to work with. So you scroll to the correct part with "inst/part" and press edit to get into stuff, cursor left or right to the function you want, then press "enter".

    Remember that when you want to change outputs from main to direct, you have to strike "edit", then select "patch" and press "enter", then select "prt" and enter, then output and enter, then you have to scroll to "ASSGN", which is for effects. roland thinks "direct output" means you've chosen "NO effect" ! then value to "7<" for ouptuts 3 or 5, or ">7" for outputs 4 or six. get it (!?!)

    To change the individual MIDI channel for an individual part, strike edit - patch - prt - midi and use value up/down buttons to change the channel. Make sure when you're in this window that you didn't accidentally get into edit/setup/midi (control channel). the upper line in your window should say "Edit/Patch?PartX/MIDI".

    To change the instrument assigned to a part just scroll back and forth with part/inst buttons till you get to the part you want to change (say, all the way to the left for part 1), and use value up/down knobs to change the instrument sounds.

    Great system though, once you get it. To go back to any previous page, press "exit". U220 remembers your previous path, assuming that you are going to go back there again next. half of it is just learning roland's terminology.

    "rx" means "midi receive channel"

    "rnd" in the pan window means "random" (BEWARE)

    there is a two step envelope generator for each patch, from the opening window, put cursor under the appropriate midi channel, strike "enter" "patch" "control" and cursor right.
