Red rock country turns green

at St. Pat's parade

by Terri Likens, staff writer

Green dogs, clowns and rodeo queens?

Faith and begorra.

Those, an floats, horses, bands, fancy cars and dance troupes are what lucky lads and bonnie lasses will see at Sedona's 31st annual St. Patrick's Day Parade Saturday.

This year's theme is Erin Go Bragh, which translates to "Ireland forever."

Robert Shields will be the parade's grand marshal.  This year's color guard is the Camp Verde Calvary.

The Arizona Highlanders Pipe Band will help set the mood.

All in all, there are 55 parade entries.

The parade starts in Uptown at 10 a.m., following two Shamrocks in the Red Rocks foot races.  One is a 5k run, and the other is a one-mile fun run/walk.  Registration for the races is at 7:30 a.m., and both start a half hour later.

Entry forms for the race are available in Sedona at all three chamber of commerce visitor centers, the parks and recreation office, Sedona Sports and The Ridge Spa & Racquet Club.

They also are available in Flagstaff at Big 5 Sporting Goods and Aspen Sports.

The parade begins at Jordan Historical Park, moves south on Jordan Road, turns west on Mesquite Avenue and disperses south on Wilson Road.

If kids don't have enough to entertain them, Cheers in Uptown is sponsoring a kid's zone with rides at the corner of Forest Road and Hwy. 89A.  The area will have the Super Slide and Orbitron rides.

the parade will also be the debut of the Sedona Police Department's trial mounted police program.

Assistant Police Chief Dana Schmidt and his horse, Moose will get a chance to practice their crowd control skills.

The parade is sponsored by the Sedona Main Street program, the Sedona Parade committee and the Northern Arizona Parks and Recreation Program.

Sedona Main Street will have its first ever float: a pot of gold.  It is also sponsoring a raffle for the $1000 "pot" of money, sponsored by Joe Wilcox Stores.

The drawing for the $1000 will be at the Sedona Home and Business Show at the high school on April 28.

Other prizes will be raffled off at the parade.

There is no on-site parking for the event.  Instead, free shuttles have been provided from the Crestview Community Church, 1090 W Hwy. 89A, and from Soldiers Pass Professional Plaza, 95 Soldier Pass Road.
