Mahathir patut
berhenti merepek
DR MAHATHIR Mohamad merepek lagi. Kali ini di Montego Bay, Jamaica. Gelagatnya saling
tak ubah seperti Sukarno di tahun-tahun 1960an. Indonesia telah muflis tetapi Sukarno
masih ingin jadi jaguh negara-negara membangun.
rakyat Malaysia sedang sibuk memikirkan "architecture baru" politik Malaysia.--15

Stop the blather, Mahathir
DR MAHATHIR Mohamad has been blathering
again. The way he was carrying on in Montego Bay brings to mind Sukarnos conduct in
the 1960s. Indonesia was bankrupt, but Sukarno still wanted to be seen as the champion of
developing nations. His people were either surviving on corn or dying of hunger. But he
kept heaping blame on "imperialism" and "neo-imperialists." To deflect
attention from Indonesias internal problems, Sukarno launched his campaign for konfrontasi
to "crush Malaysia."
Malaysia is not yet bankrupt, but Dr Mahathirs cronies are. And
he is blaming others for this. Soros and currency traders have become his chief enemies.
But then, among his prinicipal advisers in monetary matters these days is Nor Mohamed
Yaacob, someone who was involved in the currency speculation that caused Bank Negara to
lose RM12 billion. Anwar sacked Nor and asked Jaafar Hussein to quit his position as the
central banks governor. And now, thanks to Dr Mahathir, Nor is back and is the most
influential person in Bank Negara.
To turn the peoples attention from the economic crisis, Dr
Mahathir has thrown Anwar out through a conspiracy.
Dr Mahathirs blather was loudly applauded in Jamaica. Thats
nothing strange. The applause for Sukarno was more thunderous. Furthermore, Sukarnos
audience included nationalist giants and founders of the Non-Aligned Movement. There were
Nehru, Nasser and Tito. But did Suhartos heroic strut and the wild cheering save him
and Indonesia?
And the clapping in Jamaica will save neither Dr Mahathir nor the
Barisan Nasional.
The political crisis in Malaysia is a kind of creative destruction,
heralding a new era. The Jamaican applause may give Mahathir a few nights of restful
sleep. And as he sleeps to the lulling rhythm of distant claps, Malaysians are busy
working out a new political architecture for Malaysia. |
