Here are two versions of a most elegant mechanism reproduced in Meccano, the Chinese [?] South-seeking Chariot. The intriguing part is that once the chariot is placed on a hard, level surface the rider continues to point in the same initial direction whichever way the vehicle is turned or moved. An erudite article on this mechanism appeared several years ago in the NMMG magazine. The Mandarin bureaucrat on the
left is the handiwork of Graham Jost of Australia based on a Meccano magazine design,
while the paraplegic Kuomintang generalissimo to your right was built many years ago by
yours truly using only plastic Multipurpose Gears for the differential. At last I had
found a use for TWO 6" Pulleys in one model! A Drift acts as the direction-indicator
and doubles up as a lance for the warrior. The tyres on the wheels are made from my
"economy" crawler track, and, no, the General himself is NOT L*go! |
