Who Had These Comments: I was getting real short at the time of the attack. I departed VN on the 26th of March 1969. I recall the NVA dead all around the wire and in the compound. The other end of the LZ was hit much worse than our end. They had sent a lot of us to Tay Ninh, where they also hit with rockets and motars, dinging several aircraft. We returned the next morning, before flying the daily missions. They still had not cleared all the bodies. As I recall they dug large common graves for the NVA dead.

I found this site : web-search
Who Had These Comments: Hello fellow veterans, Very happy to run across this web-page and pleased to know that there is someone out there that remembers the life and times of Dau Tieng. Eventhough I was in a maintainance outfit, suffered some casualties from all the rockets and mortars that were dropped in from outside the bermline. I recall the rockets that were fired from west of the base and Charlie was aiming for the ammo dump and often times went over the dump and into the 2/77th artillery and into our company. I could see all this happening at time I was on guard north of the main gate.(near the cemetary) It was a sight that I will never forget. There are many more events that I would like to share with you all if you take the time to e-mail me. Thank you for making this web-site possible.

Oh yeah, we got mortar and rocket fire just about daily, but nobody every tried to penetrate the berm. Guess things heated up for you guys. Hope they didn't ruin the swiming pool...

My Unit: Bco 25th avaition[diamondhead]

I was there: 6 Jan 68-13 Aug 69
I found this site : looking for another action
Who Had These Comments: While my memory is a little fuzzy after all these years,I believe I was on one of the flare ships that night. I remember flying many support missions at or near Dau Tieng. I was a crewchief flying "sniff missions" during the day and flare missions at night. I found your site while trying to find about an operation that took place I think in march 69 called fire support DIAMOND along the Cambodian border. this was in what we called the angelwing area along the mekong river. This was a series of F.S.B's called Diamond 1,2,&3 to interdict supplies coming across the border. I don't know who ambushed who during this week long operation but Charie was well prepared and I don't think I ever received so much 51cal and so much small arms fire during my whole time there. But while we took a lot of causalities and inflicted a lot on charlie I only saw one small article in my home town newspaper. This was according to my officers and pilots that this was a major operation. I have not however found any other mention of this operation in any book or documentary. But isn't this typicle of the whole Viet Nam war. Any how thanks for putting on your site,I was suprised to find it and enjoyed it very much. Sincerly, Jim Long

After a week I got sent to the hospital in Cu Chi where I stayed three more weeks.I spent my tour(s) in Cu Chi, Tay Ninh, FSB Buell, Rock Crusher, Nui Ba Den (13 months) and the last month at Dau Tieng. Who Had These Comments: Our Battalion Hq./rear area was at Dau Tieng then, just South of the East end of the air strip. On the night of the battle my platoon was at fire base Mahone. We watched to the North towards Dau Tieng as green tracers went up from NVA 51 cal. and red tracers from our gun ships went down. We expected an attack on Mahone but nothing came. Several days later we made an uneventful sweep into Dau Tieng. We were told how the NVA had tunnled from the wood line, all the way to the East end of the air strip and had come up right next to a culvert in a ditch. Two cooks who were working late came out of our mess hall with rifles but dressed in white. They were shot down. The story also went around how our battalion commander stood on his second floor balcony at the battalion HQ. building and shot a NVA sniper out of a nearby tree with his sidearm. This web page is a fine tribute to one of those battles that could of gone unnoticed, except to those who were there. I'd like to make contact with Sgts. Jim Wiswell, Wayne Curtis, both from Michigan. Lt.Roe from Texas,or anyone else from 1st Platoon, Charlie Co.during this time. NEC ASPERA TERRENT

My Unit: 187th AHC, Crusaders
I was at: Tay Ninh Base Camp
I was there: 9/68 - 9/69
I found this site : posted on the 187thahc Server
Who Had These Comments: Crusaders were scheduled to work with some element of the 25th that morning. In all of the excitment no one cancelled and the flight showed up to find a mini WAR in progress. We recieved fire and were told that we could refuel in POL at our own risk (tower reported - they could not see the airfield but, reports of incoming mortor rounds were coming in. We landed in POL and I watched a 61mm mortor round go down through the top of a Mo Gas Tank maybe 30m from my A/C--no explosion -- super pucker time!! The 142 Special Operations Company (sneaky peter unit with Camo Hueys) had spent the night in the West revetment area and were in the tick of it alnight. We were told the pockets of dinks were still in the parimeter but, we could land in the West revetment area and stand by! There were dead dinks in the ditches along the revetment and down the road toward the Villa Pool and PX a bunker inside the parimeter just off the revetment had be sachel charged and caused several casualities. The PSP was mushroomed with unexploded 61mm mortor round (tail fins sticking up). Sparadic firefight broke out around the base camp all morning. I am not absolute on the date but, that was the only major battle inside the DauTieng Base that I remember.

Who Had These Comments: We had been hit two nights prior in a warm up operation for the assault on Dau Tieng. We killed 26 on our perimeter without sustaining any wounded .We found bangalor torpedoes at our barbed wire the next day.On the night of the main attack ,half our company left as a reaction force. They secured the bridge and re-took the air strip.Thank God they didn't mine the road in, as it would have stopped us cold. Those of us left at the hard spot were on 100% alert for them to try to over-run us also ,since we were streched so thin.

I was the guy that went to shut the fuel off because in the confusion during the attack someone flew off without closing the fuel lines and fuel was spilling all over and headed towards the ammo bunker. The generator operator was a Vietnamese who was still on post that night, I dont think he was supposed to be there hiding in the shack. It is said that he was signaling the V.C. I heard that his throat was slit that night, did anyone get decorated for that deed?

Who Had These Comments: I arrived at Dau Tieng a few weeks after the battle. There were still shells, craters, and burnt out vehicles scattered about. After my three or four day orientation in Cu Chi, I was as nervious as a cat on a hot tin roof. I remember the roof of the BOQ had been blown off, and it had been covered by a GP small tent. The rockets fell like rain all that night, and I never knew when the incoming stopped and the outgowing started. The next morning I was taking a shower under a 50 gal drum on a stand. You guys probably remember those setups. I had the shower hooked in the "on" position with a coat hanger, when the shelling started again. As I laid curled at the bottom of the shower, I almost drowned because I was afraid to reach up and shut the shower off. Welcome to Dua Tieng.

Who Had These Comments: I was in Dau Tieng on the night they tried to overrun the base. I had just been reassigned from C Co, 2/22 (Mech) to base camp. I was working in a bunker with radio-teletype equipment and had the night shift that night. When the rockets started about 3 more guys came into the bunker with me. Thye were all new in country and no combat experience. I had a harder time calming them than anything. Couldn't do anything but put WP's on the equipment and hoped I didn't have to pull the pins. We hear some movement around us and some voices but never spotted anyone. Found out later that the VC had gotten into the motor pool right next to us. The next day one of the Lt. wanted to go out and see the damage. We took a jeep out to the perimeter and saw all the destruction. The funny thing was that we had checked out a new jeep that had a cloth top on it. We were near the end of the runway and a C-130 (I believe that was the number for it) that had brought in supplies was getting ready to take off. It was so big that it had to back up as far as it could and run the engines really hard. While it was doing this it blew off the cloth top and destroyed it. I left it to the Lt. to explain how that happened. Been too many years to remember much more

Who Had These Comments: I was a combat Huey crewchief and we moved TDY to Dau Tieng in May of 1968 to support MACV-SOG, project Sigma. We had the Camo Hueys with no markings on them. We parked in the sand bag revetments by the north berm adjacent to the village of Dau Tieng. Our sleeping tents were by the swimming pool and showers. I was there for the July 4th 1968 mortor attack of 500+ rounds. On a couple of occations we took our M-60s up on the north berm to repulse peremeter probes after mortor attacks. The swimming pool took a hit from a mortor in about August 1968. Put a hole in the bottom and ruined it for the rest of my tour there. I had heard it was later fixed and by reading the other posts in the guest book it sounds like it was used later on. I remember watching Nui Ba Den being over run on the night of May 13,1968 from Dau Tieng and then resupplying it the next morning. I also will never forget being at POL refueling watching mortor rounds being walked toward us. Or the B-52 strikes on the Razorbacks at night. I read every post in the guest book and while I was not there the night of 2/22/69 I could relate to my brothers who were there. WELCOME HOME BROTHERS.

Who Had These Comments: I to remember the french mansions the enemy infiltrate, and the bunker line, and the satchel charges. I posted a message on the 25th div page asking if anyone out there remembered or was there Feb 23, 1969. It seems like such a coinsidence that I would find your page. I remember I had just gotten off line with Company D 1-27 and figured I was not going to see any more action to speak of. Big mistake. I have pictures 1/2 bodies ect. that I sent to a old girlfriend. I asked if she had them 25 or so years ago but was told thru a mutual friend she didnt. Maybe I'll try to contact her and see if theres a chance she might still have them. I would like to hear from anyone else that was a part of this history. Sincerely Kermit

The third bunker over was one of the bunkers that was blown up and where the enemy breeched the wire.

Who Had These Comments: Although I spent most of my time in the field, those few nights I spent in Dau Tieng were tense. In the months preceding Tet of '68, DT took mortars or 122 rockets almost every night. I always thought DT was pretty vulnerable on the eastern and southern perimeters, and am glad I wasn't there that night. Read about 2/22 at FSB Burt on 2Jan68 if you get a chance. A few of our tracks ended up like the ones in your picture page. Congrats on a well done site.

My rotation date was July 16, 1968 (I think) and was in base camp the night in early July when we got hammered with mortar and rocket fire. They got inside the perimeter that night too. Blew up an ammo or fuel dump. I have a couple of slides of that. Next day my CO Capt. DeFranco, asked me if I was going to extend 10 days to get an early out. I'll let you guess if I did. Hint: Played a lot of golf at Ft. Meade between August and November 68. God bless all of you.

They hit one side of the perimeter and came through the other. every bunker had a machine gun, 3 triple strands od constitina wire, 55 gallon drum of fuel , burried. 50 claymore mines, and they charged the wire anyway. I have some picture from the next morning. Dead bodies every where...must have been 120-140 or so. Burried the bodies in a mass grave and through lime on them to keep the smell down. We collected all weapons, papers, anything of value and use before a bulldozer took over.

Anyway I spent two wonderful weeks and evenings on the bern waiting for our friends to suprise us. I never met Kenneth Fulton, Medic w/C Co but believe he was who replaced me. Who Had These Comments: My uncle, Chester (Chip) Lowery of Nicholasville, KY. was a SP/4 serving with the HHT, 3/4 Cav of the 25th Inf. In February of 1969, he fought a battle that resulted in his being awarded the Silver Star. My research has taken me here. I hope that somebody my know something about this and may recognize his name. I believe he was assigned to D troop of the 3/4 Cav, probably a door gunner on a helicopter crew. The General Order for the Silver Star indicates that a APC had been hit with a RPG and with no regard for his own safery, he held off a wave of attackers while wounded were evacuated, drawing intense fire upon himself. I've read the AAR on this battle and portions of this report seem to indicate his involvment in this battle. Is there anybody out there that may have been there or know somebody that was there and can remember Chip Lowery. I'd love to hear any details. Gary Gray Denver / Colorado M

I found this site : Russ Conner (Thank you Russ)
Who Had These Comments: It's remarkable to find this site, and thank you for all of the hard work that went into building it!!! I was on bunker guard when Mahone II was hit. For those of you that were there, you'll remember that we started firing a 50 cal. into the woods at the SE sector. As soon as we did, RPGs started from those woods and carried all the way across the base, hitting a bunker on the NW sector (close to the small helipad). I was convinced that the men in that bunker were annihilated, but apparently they made it through the night unscathed. That NW sector, in fact, had put out massive fire power...in the morning, there were scores of their dead just beyond the helipad, and along the dirt road (I still have those morning-after pictures). On the South end of Mahone II is where their sappers got through the wire and into a bunker (probably Charlie Co.) and killed three of our brothers. The mortars rained all night, and any vehicle with tires was riding on rims in the morning!!! The next day we were deployed into Dau Tieng to man the Eastern bunker line that had been occupied by REMFs the night before. They must have taken terrible loses, however, and we felt horribly about the blood-stained bunker interior we took over. Just outside this particular bunker was a cleanly-severed enemy FOOT that was cut at the ankle...it was just sitting there outside the bunker entrance. I remember the carnage at the North end of the runway. When we got there in the afternoon, there was a TRUCK full of dead, charred VC. There were others still in the gullies and trenches outside the wire. The MPs confiscated these pictures (believe it or not) at Bien Hoa when I left...they actually went through my little Vietnamese photo albums!!! Mahone II was hit that next night and we in Alpha lost some more friends (Roger Holmes was hit by an RPG while inside a bunker). We were AWAKE for all of those 3 days and moved back and forth between Dau Tieng and Mahone II. Needless to say, it was a horrible time. Our thoughts still go out to the GIs and their families whose loses will never be forgotten. We're still trying to locate Jerry Fogarty (Chicago area) and Bill Carey (NJ). Thank you for the site and thank you for allowing me to share some thoughts with you.

Who Had These Comments: I remember bits and pieces of that night very well. Spent the first few hours of it in a pretty secure spot in the sandbagged tower on top of the TOC bunker in the 1/27 area toward the (Southeast?) corner of the perimeter. Was immensely glad to have some wolfpack people out in front of us and triple deuce tracks on our left out toward the airstrip. Had a good view of the valor and superb performance of both of those units. Later deployed to support our (1/27 Arty people) on one of the perimeter bunkers. I personally did nothing spectacular that night but there were a lot of guys who did. Here's to you!

Who Had These Comments: Dau Tieng trivia: The smell of Charles' cannabis just before our wire was attacked. We called it a "pot roast" and usually we were attacked within the hour. Why curiously, the plantation houses were never hit (in my time) by rockets or mortars. How the sandbaggers and hooch girls did not show up for work the day of a night-attack. Does anybody remember a Vietnamese youth group that used to snipe at our wire, called the YKA (young killers of Americans -loosely translated)? The early years in Dau Tieng saw this group shooting at the wire at night. I guess they earned their merit badges and became real VC, later. Does anybody remember if the saw mill (by the river-north) was open and functioning? I ran into a Vietnamese gentleman in 1988 that said he worked there in 1967. I remember it being closed, prior to Tet and thereafter. I felt he had another occupation back in the day. Reading all these entries has been theraputic for me and jogged my memory. Bless you all.

Yates platoon, was with a great bunch of Wolfhounds, one and all.Like to hear from squad leader ED (straight) Bryson, Lt. Yates, platoon leader before Yates, Lt. May I think. We wre in hootch right beside air strip when they hit most of us were asleep. Jimmy Antrobius was awake listening to his radio, When the first rockets hit the air strip he woke us up. Some of us thought it was a good idea to make it to the bunkers on the perimiter but it was to late .

Who Had These Comments: I was there and wounded that night at the bunker next to the air strip. I was in that bunker by the door when it exployed. I want to thank the guy (probably a wolfhound) who pulled me out of there as I was blind from my wounds. He told me to hold onto his belt and don't let go, then we ran for the hotch were they were collecting the wounded. I also want to thank the guys on the APC that tried to help us out. And to you chopper pilots that shot down on top of us, we totally understood. And that driver that hauled us wounded across that airstrips even though they just anounced beehive rounds were comming. Do you guys that were in that bunker remember the tear gas? Do you remember the guy crawling up on us and what we had to do? Unless you've been there it's truly hard to understand what being a soilder is all about. Thanks guys for sticking together that night. That year in Viet Nam brought me to an understanding of what really is important. One for all, one hell of a night. Tucker

Who Had These Comments: The worst of many bad nights-ammo bunker(1st cav)blew up chopper rockets flying all over C co area and primeter bunkers -we dug the hole with dozers and buried a pile of VC the next day- could count on mortors and rockets nightly- B52s pounded the ridge heavily during april to july that year-cobras and puffs around the base camp daily. I had began to think it was my imagination / bad dream- thanks for the reality check and a great site. peace

OUR COUNTRY FOR RIGHT OR FOR WRONG CALLED UPON US ALL TO RESPOND TO HER NEEDS AND WE DID. WE THAT SURVIVED, REGARDLESS OF OUR SITUATION, HAVE A DUTY TO THOSE THAT DIED, TO WORK IN THEIR STEAD TO MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE FOR ALL. GOD BLESS THEM, GOD BLESS YOU AND GOD BLESS AMERICA.
