CHARLEY DIXON WAKEFIELD, my grandfather, was a son of Sam and Lydia Whitaker Wakefield. He was born in 1874 and was raised on his grandfather Stephen Whitaker's knee, hearing all the stories from the recent Civil War where Whitaker was an officer in the Confederate Army. He was Captain for the most of the war and promoted to Major shortly before the war's end. Whitaker was the last officer to surrender east of the Mississippi River.
Grandaddy Wakefield married Ella Mae Chambers, daughter of George W, and Adeline Hicks Chambers.
