The first installment of NBC's Gulliver's Travels sailed to huge ratings in 33 metered markets Sunday, attracting more viewers than CBS and ABC combined from 9-11 p.m. ET/PT. The miniseries, starring Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen, garnered a 23.3 rating. (A ratings point equals 959,000 TV households.) CBS' The Boys Next Door movie got an 8.3 rating, and ABC's Hijacked: Flight 285 movie got a 9.8. The overnight ratings were the best for an NBC Sunday miniseries since Feb. 8, 1987, when The Two Mrs. Grenvilles aired. National figures will be out today. Gulliver's Travels concluded Monday night. NBC West Coast president Don Ohlmeyer says Gulliver's ratings "tell us that audiences will come to quality family entertainment." NBC is on a ratings roll. A week ago, the Super Bowl on NBC became the most-watched TV show in history; the special Friends that followed was the highest-rated entertainment hour this season. Season to date, NBC is the No. 1-rated network. In other ratings news: Savannah, the new soap on WB, drew strong numbers with its second episode Sunday, improving on its premiere two weeks ago. Its 6.3 rating marked the best performance for any WB regular series. Wednesday's premiere of The Louie Show didn't show much promise for a long run on CBS. The show opened in fourth place in its time slot. Hudson Street's move from Tuesdays to Saturdays didn't boost the ABC sitcom. In Saturday's metered market ratings, Tony Danza's series placed fourth at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Other changes are in store: Fox's Strange Luck will complete its first season by the end of February and be replaced March 1 at 8 p.m. ET/PT by the return of Sliders. CBS recently renewed the low-rated but critically acclaimed Almost Perfect for two additional episodes, and Daily Variety reports the show will move from Sundays to Mondays at 8:30 p.m. ET/PT in March. It would replace CBS' highest- rated 1995-96 rookie, Can't Hurry Love, which will have completed its season. CBS also is expected to remove High Society from the Monday schedule to make room for Company Man, a sitcom set at an ad agency. Copyright 1996, USA TODAY, a division of Gannett Co., Inc.
