Gearbox or Gearbox-differential (if integral) - Controls

  • Late X-1/9 shifters will bolt in but are longer. (1)

  • Shifting still sloppy even after replacing the linkage bushings? the transaxle lever ball joints are probably loose. Remove both levers and weld. You will be amazed at how crisp the shifting is. Also check all linkage ball joints as they are only riveted down. Weld as required. Readjust everything as required. If the shifter moves in a slight curve between gears, fore and aft, something is loose. (1)

  • Trouble unscrewing the speedo cable? next time you have the cluster out, cut the cable hole bigger. No big deal and it helps people with big fat fingers like mine. (1)

  • A larger "O" ring from a hydraulic supply will stop the speedometer cable drive assy from leaking tranny oil. 2-113 is the "O" ring number. Be sure the tranny air vent is open. (1)

  • Gearchange Modification by Sjaak van den Berg -- modify gearchange lever which is held by nut on gearbox. change shaft so nut does not only keep the application together but also clamps lever (this is the solution where plastic bearing in the rest of the mechanism is only a partial one)

  • Jumping out of gear by Tony Lloyd -- I have had several instances of people having problems with vehicles jumping out of gear, particularly after work has been carried out. The cause of this can be quite simple- the bolt in the gear selector arm on top of the gearbox fitted the wrong way round. When 1st gear is selected the exposed thread of the bolt butts against the arm, preventing the gear being fully engaged. This causes the car to jump out of gear.

The answer is simple, turn the bolt around! I did have one chap ring who had had his gearbox apart twice to rectify the car jumping out of gear. During our conversation I suggested that he check the direction of the bolt which he did as I waited on the phone. He confirmed it was the wrong way round. Within half an hour he was back on the phone to tell me that the fault was cured.

  • Redline synthetic tranny fluid seems to work. (1)
