Fiat Steering Wheel Removal! From: James Seabolt jseabolt@preferred.com
I finally got the steering wheel off my 81 Spider! I removed the nut and sprayed the splines with a penetrating oil, then put the nut back on. Then I backed the nut off several turns and left it on just so the thing would fly back and hit me in the face.
I then used a 4" gear puller. I tried using this once before but it didn't work because the screw wasn't long enough. So to make up the difference, I used an pneumatic fitting (like from an air rachet) and placed the nipple end in the indention of the shaft on the steering column. Then placed the pointed end of gear puller inside the threaded end of the pneumatic nipple.
After several hard turns, the wheel finally popped off the splines. I had to pull the adapter and all because the 6 screws that hold the wheel to the adapter were rusted and was afraid I would have problems locating them if I drilled them out. I'll take one of the screws out from my 80 model and try to match it up. Then drill the ones out on my 81 model. Retap them for English size if I have to.
Just thought I'd pass that along because I have heard of many people with 128s with the same problem. Hope this helps someone.
