Announcement of Awards of CCS Questionnaire/Contest
CARIBBEAN COASTAL STUDIES
c/o Oceanography, Earth Sciences Department, Millersville University, Millersville, PA 17551
Dear Respondents:
Thank you very much for your welcome response to our
questionnaire! We appreciate your time and effort in cooperating with us.
A total of 76 valid responses was received from 20 islands, representing a
response rate of 5.1%. The largest percentage responses were from:
Anguilla (29%), Turks & Caicos Islands (17.5%), St.Vincent (15%),
St.Kitts & Nevis (13.6%) and the USVI (10.3%).
The initial verbal presentation of the results was given
on July 17, 1995 in Port of Spain at the 14th Caribbean Geological
Conference. The completed paper will be due by the end of October and
published in the Conference Proceedings. The overall ranking of coastal
problems or hazards was as follows:
1 - Sewage and Solid Waste (222); 2 - Coastal Erosion (196);
3 - Beach Mining (192) 4 - Oil and Tar (189); 5 - Hurricanes (187);
6 - Flooding (143); 7 - Landslides (106); 8 - Earthquakes (81);
9 - Volcanic Eruptions (73); 10 - Other (67)
With respect to the relatively low ratings for
earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, one
should take into account that no responses were received from the French
West Indies.
The most common observation made under general comments pointed to
the need for better implementation and enforcement of already existing
laws, statutes and regulations. At the request of the anonymous winner
of the contest, the sponsors of this survey,
Environmental Science Research Associates, take
pleasure in awarding US$ 500 to each of the following N.G.O.'s:
The Montserrat National Trust
and
The Nevis Historical and Conservation Society
The $ 100 prizes went to Prof.Helen Gjessing, UVI and
Karim Hodge
of Anguilla. Congratulations and keep helping to
preserve your island!
