2.5. Degradation of Coastal Areas by Development

Our survey did not ask specifically for assessment of such problems as land reclamation, port- and industrial development, or drainage of swamps. Although very few of the respondents to our survey listed any of these under "other coastal problems," those who did give very high ratings to the adverse impacts of development.
Construction of a causeway to the Cuban keys reportedly caused considerable problems with anaerobic conditions near a major scheduled tourist development project which doubled as a coastal protected area. Lewsey, (1991 in Cambers, 1991 and Cambers, 1992) present specific evaluations of long term impacts of such industrial development projects as Point Lisas on Trinidad, Cul-de-Sac Bay, St. Lucia, and other interesting and very relevant case studies.
