Although coastal landslides are a common feature of any mountainous island, there appears to be no record of loss of life or extensive damage beyond the mega-slide which removed Port Royal from the subaerial scene following the 1692 earthquake. Recent landslides in Jamaica and St. Vincent are discussed in the present volume. (Proceedings of the 3rd Confer.of the Trinidad & Tobago Geol.Confer. & 14th Carib.Geol.Confer., 1995 in press)
In our survey, the public perception is that of a nuisance, with rating
average between 1 and 2 on a scale of 5 (most serious), just a bit higher
than that for earthquakes and volcanoes. We personally feel that this
rating is too low.
