COMMON GROUND CONCERTS FOLK MUSIC AT THE TOP OF NEW JERSEY
*********************************** PLEASE NOTE! COMMON GROUND CONCERTS HAS CEASED TO EXIST AS OF OUR MAY 15th CONCERT! THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATRONAGE AND PARTICIPATION! *********************************** TWO DECADES OF CONCERTS *********************************** Common Ground Concerts, Inc. is approaching 20 years of promoting and presenting folk music, blues, bluegrass, jazz and swing in an acoustic setting for the Sussex County lover of acoustic music seeking an alternative to popular music on the air. For all of these years, Common Ground Concerts has been alone in offering these alternative and traditional styles of music. Until recently, that is. It is a pleasure to see "coffeehouses" born anew either in a church, shop or restaurant setting. These are ideal places for local, budding artists and performers to try their turn on the stage or for those well-known and seasoned musicians to leave an audience well-entertained. I haven't considered them as competition, even though there are a so few people interested in folk music. Perhaps now this will be changing soon. I hope so. These venues provide the public with a smoke- and alcohol-free environment for the most part and an old-fashioned atmosphere where the music is so much enjoyed and the playing of acoustic instruments is so capably and professionally demonstrated. The most recent example of this is the bluegrass concert in January hosted by Common Ground Concerts. The large audience never had a better time, and Skyline with Tony Trischka, performed its very best. Other examples in the past have been musicians like Lou Stebner, the Django Rheinhardt-style, yodeling, flat-picker, who unfortunately left for the West; or John Sheehan, who plays the guitar, banjo and lute with such skill and speed, enlisting the involvement of his entire being when he plays; or Mike Esposito, a blues singer who has such a captivating command of his dobro and national steel guitar, it leaves the audience spellbound to be sure. He and John Sheehan are among others who performed recently at the Left Bank Coffee House. Go see them play! These are only a few of the many artists who have performed at Common Ground Concerts in Newton. A twin folk-duo from Connecticut will be featured on April 17th at the Community College Chapel Theater and a New Orleans-style jazz band on May 15th at the First United Methodist Church in Newton. As we end this century, people continue to be interested and nostalgic for the ways and sounds of the past as well as contemporary folk music. Traditional old-time, folk, blues and bluegrass music on acoustic instruments is fun to make and a real pleasure to listen to in person. Contemporary and old sounds are woven together at today's coffeehouses for you to absorb. Short of taking lessons, those skilled finger-picking guitarists are worth looking at up close. I encourage more people to come out to support them those who bring the concerts to you. The cost and the atmosphere cannot be beat. Common Ground Concerts is ending with the May 15th concert. All those who have supported us for the past twenty years, our thanks go to you for being a great audience! We will look for you at the variety of coffeehouses in the area.
