Life in a small town
This list recently appeared as part of an e-mail that made its rounds on the
Internet. How many of these things apply to you?!
YOU MIGHT BE FROM A SMALL TOWN IF...
--Author unknown
- You knew everyone you graduated with.
- You get a whiff of manure or the sight of corn and think of home.
- You know what 4-H is.
- You remember a time when there was only one stop light, and you can still count the
number of stoplights in your town on one hand.
- You used to drag "Main."
- You noticed when someone had a new car.
- You ever went cow-tipping, or took someone snipe-hunting.
- You had difficulty buying cigarettes or beer because all the store
clerks knew how old you were (and if you were old enough they'd probably tell your
parents anyhow).
- When you did find someone old enough and brave enough to buy for you, you still
had to go out to the country and drive on back roads to enjoy the purchase.
- Social acceptance in town depended on the approval of a small group that met each day
for coffee.
- You've been in a parade.
- You fix up to go buy milk lest anyone starts the rumor that you have gained weight or
quit taking care of yourself.
- Friday nights were spent at the game (either football or basketball) and usually ended
up with getting kicked out of the pizza place.
- You have to drive an hour to buy school clothes.
- You ever ordered your wardrobe out of a catalog.
- You drove to a neighboring town to find something interesting to do on a date.
- It was cool to date someone from a neighboring town.
- You had senior skip day.
- The whole school went to the same party after graduation.
- You don't give directions by street names or house numbers, but you give directions by
references (turn by the gas station, go two blocks past the grocery store, etc.).
- When you talk about ordinary occurrences at your hometown, friends (who grew up in big
cities) start laughing and say, "You did what?".
- You actually go to the post office to get your mail.
- You can recognize 5 or more different types of farm machinery and tell what each is used
for.
- You've ever blown up or hit a mailbox for fun.
- There is at least one dirt road within the city limits.
- A good party consists of a barn, a bonfire and some cheap beer or wine.
- You've ever driven somewhere with people in the trunk.
- You've been to a drive-in.
- You've TP'd someone's yard (or have been TP'd).
- You walk into any bar in town and everybody DOES know your name.
