Plate 120 Milk jug with the Arms of Barnwell, c. 1745.
Porcelain. Decorated in enamels; Height 120mm
The jug bears the arms of Barnwell (Gules a saltire embattled between four crescents argent) with crest and motto LOYAL AU MOAT (correctly MORT). This translates to "Loyal to Death". Part of the service was made in China during the reign of the Ch’ien-lung Emperor (1736-95), Ch’iung dynasty, for Michael Barnwell (died 1792) of the east India Company. The arms are taken from the family’s bookplate (no. 121). Bibliograghy : Howard, 1974. P. 416. BM OA Franks 780+.
