" 'If everyone took an 'eye for an eye', Gandhi said, 'the whole world would be blind' " page 196
This simply sets the tone for the entire book. Sister Helen is confronted with this quote several times. People use it to justify their stance on the death penalty. When looked at literally, this statement means that revenge is the answer and those who commit crimes should be killed. But if one looks at the quote like Gandhi did, we all would be blind. So many mistakes are made and so many evils are committed. Shouldn't we just forgive and let God judge? This philosophy is only applicable in a strictly religious sense. This is Sister Helen's tone for her book. Forgiveness and love. She gives both freely to victim's parents, to inmates and to those around her. Her love is an earthly forgiveness and in her eyes, as a nun, judgement is not up to humans, but rather God.
