"The priest leaves. I feel sorry for the old man. He is performing his priestly service as he has for fifty years or more... his trust is in the ritual, that it will do its work, even in a foreign language." Page 81

This is an observation of Sister Helen's obviously since the book is written by her, her character shows through, but this quote shows her goodness not as a mere figure but as a person connected with life and her own God. She has acted with the prison as a spiritual advisor and at the Hope house with impoverished people. She is able to connect with inmates and unwed mothers and make them feel what she feels about God. Her teaching is unlike the foreign Latin and unfeeling communion that the priest offers. It is unlike a stereotypical nun. She teaches love through example and through giving love to those who have never loved deeply. Though Helen is no priest, she touches people on a level much like a priest would.
