BACKGROUND: Janet Simms was a young, hot-shot FBI agent working her first case when her
life took an amazing turn. Her investigation of a money laundering scheme had revealed
numerous ties back to a number of government officials. However, those officials had a new
"friend", who was capable of making things "happen." He was asked to get Simms of off the
case. To do so, he engineered a car wreck that killed her parents, and then had her informed that
it wasn't entirely an accident.
Simms' first response was sheer rage. She wanted to charge out and hunt down the villains who
had killed her parents, procedures be damned. Her superior, afraid both for her safety and career
as well as the Bureau's reputation, put her in touch with an old friend, Brian Carpenter. Carpenter
was able to harness her rage and teach her how to go after her enemy within the rules. However,
her enemy was Teddy Pliler; aka Thaddeus Pugh. Pliler's government connections enabled him to
avoid prosecution, or even real suspicion. However, Simms owed Carpenter, and she repaid him
by joining his Foundation and tutoring a young man in the arts of criminology, heroism, and
avenging one's parents. Later, after Michael left for Duke, she joined Kenneth Lee is attacking a
drug ring in Baltimore. After several harrowing years, they broke the ring, only to have the
mastermind escape. Pursuing her to Dallas, she and Ken joined the Guardians in time to assist in
several battles.
Janet has always been intimidated by those with superhuman powers, but she counters this fear
with her iron will and confidence in her skills. She feels that she cannot admit weakness, since she
lacks the redeeming powers to counter weakness. Still, her array of detective skills makes her
invaluable for crime-fighting.
