Over 40 years ago, in 1952, there were two girls, Marvyn Glover and Barbara Ferraro, who were dating a couple of Alpha Phi Omega Fraternity brothers. Because of their relationship, the girls were doing a lot of service with Apha Phi Omega. The ladies decided to form their own service sorority in order to give other ladies a vehicle in which to perform service in the community. That sorority was Gamma Sigma Sigma. Since the beginning, they were doing service along side of Alpha Phi Omega, as sisters of Alpha Phi Omega.
After searching for other groups having similiar ideals and purposes, the Drexel group discovered the Omega Service Sorority at Boston University and the Women's Service Organization at New York University.
The Constitutional Convention was held at Beekman Towers in New York City, October 10-12, 1952. 9 schools were represented: Boson University, Brooklyn College, Drexel Institute of Technology, Los Angeles City College, New York University, Queens College, University of Houston and Miami University of Ohio. Barabara Van Sciver Ferraro from Drexel was the first National President. The date commemorating the Constitutional Convention, October 12, is designated as Founder's Day.
Brooklyn College requested that Maroon
and White be established as the colors of Gamma Sigma Sigma. The National
Constitution went into effect on January 1, 1953.
Gamma Sigma Sigma is based on the ideals
of Service Friendship and Equality.
The PURPOSE of Gamma Sigma Sigma is
to assemble college ad university students in the spirit of service to
humanity and to develop friendship among students of all races and creeds.
Our motto is "Unity in Service"
The official FLOWER is the White Rose.
The colors of Gamma Sigma Sigma are
Maroon, symbolizing service and White, symbolizing friendship and equality.
The colors can be found on the Pledge Pin, the Membership Pin and the Coat
of Arms.
Selectivity of members and hazing have
been prohibited by Gamma Sigma Sigma since its foundation. It is Gamma
Sigma Sigma's non-selectivity policy which is the difference between us
and social organizations. The variety of personalities and talents of our
members has built an organization with vision and creativity. Members in
Gamma Sigma Sigma, enjoy many friendships. Some will last through college.
Some will last a lifetime.
The commitment to service, open membership
and opportunities to learn and grow sets Gamma Sigma Sigma apart from the
social sororities and fraternities. Our membership makes us diversified
and unique--the essence of Gamma Sigma Sigma.
