Local History

On Saturday, April 4,1981 at the annual Alpha Phi Omega Founder's Week picnic, Sister Kim Taylor ( an APO sweetheart) was approached by the brothers and asked if she was interested in starting a colony of Gamma Sigma Sigma. They gave her a petition form, an opportunities pamplet and a question and answer booklet about GSS to heighten her interest. During the following week Sister Kim Taylor and her friend Shirley Hackett proceeded to go about the task of completing the petition form and getting other women interested.
The first Rush Party was held on April 20th in the Ferguson Student Center. The Rush was a success ending with 40 women signing up to help start the colony.  This group of women named themselves Women Interested in GSS until they reached colony status.  The Women Interested became a colony in November 1981 with 27 members.
