The story of Dragonball was heavily influenced and based on an
Chinese fantasy novel of Hsi Yu Chi (it's original name), ("Journey to West", in English, "Sei Yu Gei" in Cantonese.)
The folklore which was written hundereds of years ago in the middle of the
16th century by an Chinese author and satirist Wu Chêng-ên.
The full size story was LARGE, compared to the size of an bible.
The folklore was told in China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan and Eastern Asia.
There are various versions of the English translations of "Hsi Yu Chi",
both are full length and abridged.
The full length versions were translated as "Journey to West", while the abridged versions were translated as "Monkey King" or "The story of the Monkey King".
Hsi Yu Chi has influenced one manga/anime which is Dragonball.

The character of Dragonball Son Gokuu has similarities to Sun Wu Kong.
They both use the same sort of weapon the nyoibo, the staff that can expand or shrink at the owners command.
Even they both are well known for using an kintoun, an cloud which both use for transportation.
But they wear different clothing.
And most of all they have the same name in meanings.
except their original names are pronounced differently and are in different languages.
One is that Gokuu can transform to Super Saiyajin and beyond SSJ.
But Wu Kong can't, Actually he is blond fur.
One is that the names of Sun Wu Kong is Chinese and Son Gokuu is Japanese.
Probably Son Gokuu is an descendant or reincarnation of Sun Wu Kong.
Sun Wu Kong is an monkey that eats pine seeds.
As The King of the Monkeys, he wore a pheonix plume hat, Cuirass of chain-mail and
Cloud Stepping Shoes.
As the disciple of Tripitaka, he wears a tiger
skin skirt, one of his master's shirts and a fillet around his head.
His character traits is Loyal, intelligent, Despises self pity, and Mischevous.
His main weapon is an Golden Hooped Cudgel from the Eastern Ocean.
He also has the supernatural ability to do Cloud flying, Cloud Trapeze, seventy-two
transformations, growing, shrinking, being able to pluck one of his
hairs out and turning it into anything.
He was Born at Ao Lai from a rock, has a stone body.
As a
Buddhist monk, his religion is Buddhist of course and he wears a
fillet which contracts whenever Tripitaka recites the Tight Fillet
Spell.

Chu Pa Chieh and Oolong
One of the main villain's of Sun Wu Kong, Pa Chieh,
An incredibly fat clumsy looking humanoid with a
pig's snout, piggy ears and a pig's appetite.
He wears a grey monk's robe.
His character traits are Greedy, lusty, immature, disloyal, and stupid.
He is armed with an muckrake.
He has the supernatural ability to do thirty two transformations but
it is hard for him to transform into anything small. He can also do
cloud flying.
He used to be the Marshal of the Heavenly Reeds of
the Heavenly River but then he somehow 'dallied' with the Goddess of
The Moon.
As a punishment, he was reborn but there was an accident in
is rebirth so he turned out to be a half pig half man.

Well I guess that Son Gokuu, and Oolong's character traits are based on those
of Sun Wu Kong and Chu Pa Chieh.
Does anyone know anymore characters from Dragonball who's character traits are the same as an character from Hsi Yu Chi?
I know that Gyuu Maou has an character trait from the Bull King.
But I don't know much about him.
Is there an character trait from Kuririn or Bulma?
Maybe Bulma supposely has her trait from the travelling monk.
