With one deal, the struggling Toronto Raptors got an injection of youth and athleticism that was sorely needed. Glen Grunwall realized the team needed some help and went out and did something about it. He's a very savvy GM and rarely makes bad trades. This, in my opinion, is the first of a few more minor trades. Look for Dell Curry to be moves in the future, possibly for Otis Thorpe. The trade:
Denver gets: Kevin Willis - center Alex Radojevic - center Garth Joseph - center Toronto gets: Tracy Murray - forward/guard Keon Clark - center/forward Mamadou N'Daiye - centerThe Raptors lose precious low post scoring in Kevin Willis. He had been playing very well recently. They also get rid of two players who haven't played. Radjoevic hadn't played in two years and Joseph hadn't played all year. Both were throw ins. The Raptors get back former Raptor Tracy Murray. They really need his outside shooting. He's a great shooter and loves Toronto. The only reason he left is that the Raptors couldn't match the contract offer from Washington in 1996 because of some crazy NBA rule. Murray can spread the floor. He can also run some and will back up at two and three. Vince Carter will love this new found space. Dell Curry hasn't been playing well and Dee Brown is gone. The Raptors were looking for a shooter of this caliber. Keon Clark gives the Raptors a young, athletic shot blocker they haven't seen since Marcus Camby, without the baggage. He can run, jump, block shots and rebound. N'Daiye is a throw in, but if he plays as well as he did at Auburn, he'll be a decent 10-15 minute player who can bang some.
I usually say whoever got the best player wins the trade, but I don't know if that is the case. Willis is a good player, but the combo of Clark and Murray have a larger upside and are much younger. On the other hand, the Nuggets weren't playing either, so it's a win-win. Now McDyess and LaFrenz don't have to guard centers 48 minutes. Willis can do that. In the end, I think the Raptors got the best deal because of the overall talent, but in Nuggets filled their needs without giving up anyone in their top 8 rotation.
