What follows is Andy's bio, but it should be noted here that Andy is one of the outstanding operators in the wire service today. Although he now works mostly in Canada, Andy spent over three years in Europe in the late 80's when it was such a great time to be working in this field (ie: lots of news, big budgets..) and an even better time for those of us starting out at that time, to learn from people like Andy and Nick. Taking news photographs is something most of us do relatively well after practice and experience. Taking news features is an entirely different, and far more creative and thus difficult, enterprise. Have a look at Andy's photos and enjoy... APH. Started in news photography in 1970 as a copyboy in the picture department of the Canadian domestic news agency CP's Toronto office. Promoted to darkroom tech in 1972 and then photographer in Ottawa buro in 1975. Joined staff of Hamilton Spectator in 1978 for 10 months. Left Spectator to join UPI (UPC in Canada) based in Vancouver buro until 1980 then transferred to Ottawa. Joined Reuters upon the formation of newspictures operation in 1985 based in Ottawa. Left Reuters after six months to accept as Canadian Prime Minister's photographer. Re-joined Reuters in 1987 as editor on European Picture Desk in Brussels and then London. Transferred from London to Toronto in 1990 to take up position as Chief Photographer for Canada.
