Planet Furrball's Easy RGB-Hex Conversion Table


Here's somethin' for you to chew on: Your average high-end computer monitor can display literally millions (16, to be exact) of colors, yet there are only 216 that are considered "web safe" (non-dithering, if you will). These are written out in a 6-digit/number combination called "Hexadecimal". (For example, Aqua/Cyan is written out as "#00FFFF". Don't ask me why you have to have that # in front. You just do.) This is the format the beloved (HAH!) HTML format recognizes. There's just one problem ...

Your average paint program (such as MS Windows Paintbrush or ZSoft's PC Paintbrush) and even the above-average ones (like JASC's Paint Shop Pro and the legendary Adobe Photoshop) don't work in that format. Instead, they use something called RGB (for Red, Green and Blue), which uses three sets of numbers with values ranging from 0 to 255. (Thus, the previously mentioned Aqua/Cyan is translated as 0,255,255.) You wanna know something even more maddening? You can try writing your colors in RGB (the format is: "RGB (0, 255, 255)", BTW), and although M.I.E. will read it, Netscape won't. So, how to translate?

Let me say this here and now: Thank God for the Internet. Without it, we wouldn't have all these great sources of information to solve problems such as this. And while there are some great color converters out there (the one at Draac.com, in particular, is amazing!), and one or two nifty reference tables as well (I refer you to Cyber Solutions, Inc. and wallpaperworld), they don't really make it easy for you to find the right combination. Which is where this handy chart comes in. This takes (hopefully) all of the guesswork out of it, and (to use a battered old cliche), it's so simple, you'll wonder why nobody thought of doing it this way before now. Here's how it works: On the left, you'll see two pair of numbers, representing the R/G (Red/Green) parts of the equation. On the top, you'll see six numbers representing the B (Blue) part. If you want to figure out the Hex version of, say, 102/255/153, just go down the left side to the row marked "102/155/" and find the point where it intersects with the column marked "153", and viola!. "#66FF99" (an unpretentious shade of blue-green). This also works in reverse, of course: If you want to find the RGB equivalent of, let's say, "#336699", all you have to do is move to the left and the top of that square, and presto! You'll get the RGB value of 51/102/153. For ease and convenience, you couldn't beat it with a stick.
