The surname Fennell means "grower or sower of
fennell", from the name O'Fionnghail, descendant of
Fionnghal. Variations include Fenell, Funnell, and Fonnell. Early
families bearing the name Fennell originated from Counties
Tipperary and Kilkenny. The name is composed of the elements
"Fionn", meaning "Fair" and "Gal",
meaning "valour". Information regarding our Irish
ancestors is quite sketchy at this point in time, although we are
quite lucky in that we are able to trace our roots in Ireland
back to the early 1800s. I was very fortunate to have been able
to visit my mother's ancestral homeland, and to meet many of our
relatives, in May 1998.
