Our Fennell and Related Families

The surname Fennell means "grower or sower of fennell", from the name O'Fionnghail, descendant of Fionnghal. Variations include Fenell, Funnell, and Fonnell. Early families bearing the name Fennell originated from Counties Tipperary and Kilkenny. The name is composed of the elements "Fionn", meaning "Fair" and "Gal", meaning "valour". Information regarding our Irish ancestors is quite sketchy at this point in time, although we are quite lucky in that we are able to trace our roots in Ireland back to the early 1800s. I was very fortunate to have been able to visit my mother's ancestral homeland, and to meet many of our relatives, in May 1998.

Generation #1:

Our ancestor Roger Fennell was born at a time and place yet unknown. He married Kate Smyth, and died bef.1901 in Ireland. He was likely a fisherman by trade. They had one known child, Thomas Fennell.

Generation #2:

The sole recorded child of our ancestor Roger Fennell was Thomas Fennell (follow the link to view the Thomas Fennell family page, and refer to the CHC Report) who was baptized on August 23, 1862, at Seafield, in the Parish of Kilmurry-Ibrickane, Co. Clare, Ireland. His baptismal sponsors were Bridget Mahon and James Brody. Thomas Fennell married Bridget Foran on July 30, 1882, at Quilty, in the Parish of Kilmurry-Ibrickane, witnesses being Thomas Hickey and Jane Falsey. Bridget was the daughter of James Foran and Honora Shanahan. Thomas was a fisherman by trade and it is believed he may have been an only child.
