The Review

For being the start of a whole new generation of games that have contributed to what we have today in the industry, Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega Genesis was pretty [insert word of choice here] good. It had great graphics for its time (and still does), great gameplay and sound, and speed that blew every other game out of the water. People all over the world were in awe at the little blue blur running in a loop on the screen. Remember those days? Anyway, now let's get to the gameplay and simple premise. You are Sonic the Hedgehog, a speedy blue hedgehog that can run at unbelievable speed. Your rival is the evil Dr. Robotnik, who captures innocent animals and turns them into robots. Your goal, as the only hope for the world, is to free all of your friends and stop Dr. Robotnik. Sound simple? It is. But it's not easy. You also have to collect 6 (7 in later games) magical gems called Chaos Emeralds in order to succeed. Chaos Emeralds have a mystical power, and Robotnik wants to use that power for his evil intentions. The only way to get the best ending is to collect all the Chaos Emeralds and defeat Dr. Robotnik in the Final Battle. The gameplay mechanics are fairly simple. You can run (the fun part), jump, and roll into a ball for a Spin Attack. Most of the game involved destroying robots, hopping platforms, and avoiding obstacles. Each of the 6 Zones has 3 Acts, and at the end of every 3rd Act, you fight a boss (Dr. Robotnik in one of his crazy inventions). While most of the game is fast-paced enemy stomping platform jumping fury, sometimes you just have to stop and look around to find the right way. And sometimes, there can be several routes. The game is very large, and it's only the first of a series of games that get bigger! The gameplay is enough to be extremely enjoyable the first few times around, and the fun, fast-pace action will keep the replay value high on this one. Also, the Chaos Emeralds are hard to collect, so you should spend quite a time getting them all. Overall, this is an outstanding work by the Sonic Team, and is a definite must have for all Genesis owners.

Ratings:

Graphics: 8.5 - Very good for the time, but not to the level of its brethren.

Sound: 8.0 - Sounds great, well composed (you'll be humming some of these!), and fits very well to the game. Sound effects are done nicely as well.

Originality: 9.5 - Although the general idea was from earlier side-scrollers, this game took that genre and took it to the next level. The first game with blurring speed (and still one of the only ones).

Play Control: 9.0 - Simple button arrangement, fluid movement and quick response makes great control. Sonic can be quite hard to stop when going very fast, though!

Gameplay: 9.5 - Stands out from the side scrolling crowd. From the breathtaking speed to jumping lava pools to running down speedways, this game is a joy to behold.

Replay Value: 8.0 - Once you get all of the Chaos Emeralds, it's beaten, but still very fun, enough to make you want to come back for more.

Challenge: 8.5 - Not too long, but difficult. It's twice as hard if you're going for all the Emeralds.

OVERALL: 8.75 - A genuine game. Fun, fast, and great. Get it.
