Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Review
Sonic the Hegdeghog 3

The final installment of the Sonic series having a number after it (next came Sonic & Knuckles, then Sonic 3-D Blast). This is the best of the series by far. Here goes the review...

The Review

Now THIS is a game. The greatest Sonic side scroller ever made. This game has awesome prerendered graphics, sweet music, amazing speed and variety, and has super-cool Special Stages. This one still includes Tails, which can be controlled by the second player, but there's something new...the player can now make him fly!! He can even carry Sonic! And Sonic has a new "Insta-Shield" which you use in mid-air that puts a little shield over Sonic for a split second. Very useful if timed correctly. You also meet someone new: Knuckles. He's been tricked by Robotnik into thinking that you're the enemy trying to steal the Master Emerald. But Robotnik's actually the one that does it (the lie was to distract Knuckles). One thing I must say though, is that the game is a tad too easy. It has six zones (each one is monstrously huge), and some of the bosses are fairly tough, but the game's overall challenge is not too great. But that's also due partly to the new save feature. But none of this takes away from the game, as it is still immensly fun and twice as nice with two players. And, there are some new items! The Shield doesn't exist anymore and has been replaced by the Fire Shield, Water Shield, and the Lightning Shield. Each have they're own special powers. The Fire Shield guards you from fire and you can turn into a fireball. The Water Shield lets you breathe underwater forever and you can bounce like a ball. The Lightning Shield attracts Rings to you like a magnet and let's you do an electrifying (get it? Aww...) double jump. The plot is a little different this time. Robotnik has still captured animals and turned them into robots, but he has also re-launched his ultimate weapon, the Death Egg (from Sonic 2, Sonic took it down). This time, Robotnik has a vengeance, and he's waiting at the end for you with a gadget that'll smack you sideways if you're not careful. Once again, Super Sonic really helps in this one. This game is a must-have buy for anyone that has a Sega Genesis (if you have to choose between any of the others, GET THIS). Besides, if you also have Sonic & Knuckles and you lock-on, it becomes one of the greatest games ever made (with a surprisingly good storyline!) Here are the ratings...

Ratings:

Graphics: 9.5 - Wonderful prerendering and excellent use of color. This game is eye candy!

Sound: 9.5 - The best Sonic tunes (besides Sonic Adventure, of course). The sound effects are great as well.

Originality: 9.5 - Still a side scroller, but with so many new twists, like Knuckles, Shields, flying, and many new little things to use throughout the Zones.

Play Control: 9.5 - Same as the others. Tight and responsive.

Gameplay: 10.0 - Absolutely wonderful. From the running on speedways, to rolling down hills, to flying on tops, to swing on vines, this game is a blast.

Replay Value: 9.0 - Rather easy, especially since you can save, but still very fun to come back to.

Challenge: 7.0 - The one weak point of the game. It's rather short and easy. But it doesn't hurt the overall gameplay.

Overall: 9.75
