9/5-14/9 Renzo Piano - in the series "The Architect's Studio" at Louisiana. www.louisiana.dk

In the series The Architect’s Studio, Louisiana has in recent years focused on some of the most innovative and influential architects of our time. Having so far included Frank O. Gehry, Henning Larsen and Norman Foster, these shows have been conceived as studio exhibitions, offering insight into the individual architect’s work processes, methods and sources of inspiration. The upcoming exhibition, which is also the last in this series, presents the Italian architect Renzo Piano.

Renzo Piano was born in 1937 in Genova, Italy and graduated from Milan Polytechnic Architecture School in 1964. He made his international breakthrough with the Centre Pompidou in Paris (1972 – 77) which he designed in collaboration with architect Richard Rogers. The exposed steel skeleton of this building, the bold colours applied to its technical installations and the accentuation of its internal passageways are characteristic of Renzo’s high-tech form of expression. He has since designed the Menil Collection Museum in Houston, Texas (1981 – 87), the Kansai Airport Terminal in Osaka, Japan (1994) and the Paul Klee Museum in Bern, Switzerland (1999).

23/5-31/8 Arnold Newman - American renowned photographer born 1918 with a very personal, unorthodox and - at times - provocative method - at Louisiana.
www.louisiana.dk

Among the great personalities portrayed by the master photographer Arnold Newman are Woody Allen, Leonard Bernstein, Jean Cocteau, David Hockney, John F. Kennedy, Piet Mondrian, Marilyn Monroe, Georgia O’Keeffe (not least), Eugene O’Neill, Pablo Picasso, Igor Stravinsky and Andy Warhol.

Arnold Newman is a pioneer and supreme master of the Environmental Portrait, a form of portraiture in which the setting is a key element: the artist in his studio; the politician in his office or in front of a government building; the scientist in his laboratory. ”People exist in space”, says Arnold Newman, who brings together two major traditions in American photography: the studio portrait and the documentary photo.

Born in New York on 3rd March, 1918, Newman began photographing in Philadelphia at the age of twenty. Despite the fact that the 1930s depression was a difficult time in the U. S., he quickly became successful and in the 1940s established his own studio in New York’s Manhattan.

Over the years, Newman has become one of the world’s most respected photographers. He has portrayed all American presidents since Harry S. Truman. His most famous portrait, shot in New York in 1946, is of the composer and conductor Igor Stravinsky. Stravinsky is seated at the lower left corner of the picture, taking up very little space in comparison to the large, curved lid of a grand piano. In this almost musical composition, Newman has placed the composer as a ”detail” of its large, musical space.

Today it has practically attained the status of an icon, but at the time it was a fresh and differently conceived image, so provocative, in fact, that the otherwise very modern magazine Harper’s Bazaar rejected it. Newman, in turn, had numerous other pictures published and became one of the great, legendary figures working for LIFE Magazine, where he was given ample opportunity to create on-location portraits.

bulletConstitution Day, 5 June, celebrates the Danish Constitution and the introduction of democracy in 1849. All shops and schools are closed on that day, and public offices and institutions close at 12 noon. Politicians and other celebrities make speeches in parks and gatherings throughout the country.
bulletSince 1912, Valdemar's Day, 15 June, has been the day on which Danes celebrate their flag, the Dannebrog, which to the Danes is their most important national symbol. It is known as Valdemar’s Day because the Dannebrog, so tradition says, fell from the sky during one of the war expeditions of Valdemar the Victorious to Estonia in 1219. Valdemar's day also commemorates the reunification of Southern Jutland with Denmark in 1920.
bulletMidsummer Day, 24 June, was originally a pagan flag-flying day marking the summer solstice, and it is still celebrated in Denmark. With the arrival of Christianity, however, the day changed its name to St. Hans (literally St. John's, from John the Baptist). On the eve before Midsummer day, June 24, bonfires are lit to mark the changing season. A witch made of wood, cloth and fireworks is placed on top of the bonfire. The fireworks symbolises the  swift dispatch of all witches to damnation, where tradition has it they assemble on Midsummer Eve. According to Danish folklore this assembly takes place on Bloksbjerg - also known as Brocken, in Germany.   Please see "Getting to Know the Danes"
