The next day, Reina looked out her window to see her shadow sitting in a car across the street.
"Look what we have here, Reina," she said aloud. "Our stalker is back. What shall we do? It would never do to have a nosy mortal see something he has no business seeing," she smiled impishly. "You won't get away from me this time."
Reina's smile looked like the smile of the proverbial cat that ate the canary as she headed out into the sunny Seacouver day. The smile became even more feline as she noticed the car pulling out into traffic behind her. Reina put her James Bond cassette into the tape deck as she led her shadow out of the city. The cell phone rang enhancing the Bondian atmosphere.
"Reina speaking."
"Hey Reina," Richie came through the cell phone. "You wanna shoot some pool later?"
"Why? You looking to lose some money? I thought you had a hot date."
"Yeah, well, you know how it goes."
I wish. I can't remember the last time I had a hot date, Reina thought. "Sure," she said.
"Is that the James Bond theme playing?"
"Yeah."
"What are you up to?"
"Me? Up to something? Where would you get such an idea?"
"I don't know. It's not exactly your usual music choice. The last time you played that tape you had outrun some cruisers."
"You were there. You know that was completely necessary. Those guys were ugly," Reina laughed. "But don't worry. I'm not up to anything this time I just was in the mood to listen to this tape."
"Why don't I believe you?"
"Because you are a suspicious soul."
"No. You are the suspicious one."
"So what time do you want to play?" Reina asked changing the subject.
"After dinner at Mac's."
"Oh. Is that tonight?"
"It's tonight."
Reina sighed. "Damn. Is Duncan going to be playing amateur shrink again?"
"What do you think?"
"Oh joy. Okay. After dinner at Duncan's."
"I'll see you at the dojo later."
"Sure. Later Richie."
"Later Reina."
"Is everything all right?" MacLeod asked Richie as he hung up the phone.
"Sure. I'm going to get my clock cleaned after dinner tonight."
"Pool with Reina?"
"Yeah."
"I thought you had a hot date."
"Yeah, well, you know how it goes."
"So, why the puzzled look?"
"I don't know. Reina seemed different. Like she was up to something."
"Reina's a grown woman and an immortal. She can take care of herself."
"That's why you followed her to Los Angeles right?"
MacLeod shrugged. "When I spoke to her last she seemed fine." More or less. "She can take care of herself."
"You've already said that."
"She's two years older than you Rich. I'm sure she won't do anything stupid." Again.
"I guess you're right," Richie said. "I'll just go upstairs and see if there's anything that needs doing."
MacLeod waited until Richie was up the stairs before calling Reina's cell phone.
"Reina speaking."
"Reina, how are you?"
"I'm fine Duncan."
"Good. Good. You're sounding –chipper today."
Reina raised an eyebrow and smiled. "I do not do chipper. However, if by that comment you mean that I do not seem to be brooding or morose, then I suppose while chipper is not the ideal word to describe my mood, I would have to say yes."
It was MacLeod's turn to raise an eyebrow as he heard the James Bond music in the background. He knew Reina was up to something. "How about lunch?"
"I can't. I've got –errands to run. Don't worry. I'll definitely be done by dinner though so I'll see you tonight. I'm not planning to duck out on you or anything."
"Good."
"Bye Duncan."
"Bye Reina. Oh Reina."
"Yes?"
"Try to stay out of trouble."
"But of course," Reina said smoothly. "Don't I always?"
