Organized in Youngstown, Ohio and removed to Cleveland under the direction of Captain William R. Sterling.

Three Month Service: Mustered in April 30^th, 1861 at Cleveland, Ohio by William Clinton, 1^st Lieutenant, 10^th Infantry U.S.A., Mustering Officer. Mustered out August 18^th, 1861 at Youngstown, Ohio by John R. Edie, Major, 15^th Infantry, U.S.A, Mustering Officer.

Three Year Service: Mustered in at Camp Dennison, Cincinnati, Ohio, between June 17^th and June 19^th, 1861. Mustered out July 6^th, 1864 at Cleveland, Ohio.

Notes:

	The Battle of Winchester, Va. on March 23^rd, 1861 was also noted as the Battle of Kernstown, Va.
	Soldiers who have no rank associated with their name are Privates in the Army.
	On June 11^th, 1864 a detachment of men from the 7^th Regiment was detailed to the 5^th Regiment. On Oct. 31^st, 1864 the men of this detail were absorbed into the ranks of the 5^th O. V. I.

	The Seventh Regiment was relieved from active duty June 11^th, 1864, by Circular No. 36, War Department, dated May 2^nd, 1864.
	Soldiers whose names are highlighted in green represent those men who enlisted in the original Regiment in June of 1861 and survived all three years of service to be mustered out when the Regiment was discharged in July of 1864.

STERLING, WILLIAM R.; Entered the Service April 24th, 1861 for 3 Months; mustered out and reenlisted June 17^th, 1861 for 3 Years as Captain; wounded slightly in the right leg during the Battle of Cedar Mountain, Va., Aug. 9^th, 1862; detached on the staff of Gen. Butterfield Sept. 17^th, 1862 (during the Battle of Antietam, Md.); taken prisoner while on a scouting expedition near Aldie, Va. about June 17^th, 1863; escaped and returned to duty; mustered out with the company July 6^th, 1864. Mr. Sterling entered the service as Captain of Company I. He carried with him some considerable military experience, having been connected with a company in his Native State. He accompanied the regiment in its Western Virginia campaign, taking an honorable part in the affair at Cross Lanes. He was with the detachment in its march over the mountains to Charleston, during which he rendered great assistance, contributing largely towards bringing the command off in safety.

From Charleston he returned to his home on leave, but soon after returned to his command, accompanied by a number of recruits. He now took part in the various marches and skirmishes occurring in the mountain department of Eastern Virginia. He was not in the battles of Winchester or Port Republic; but was in all the marches before and after those engagements. At the battle of Cedar Mountain he did yeomen’s service. His company was led with such coolness and bravery, that many a rebel was made to bite the dust. He now remained with the regiment until General Hooker came to the command of the Army of the Potomac, when Captain Sterling was assigned a position on his staff. In this capacity he served until after the battle of Chancellorsville. A short time after this engagement he was taken prisoner by a roving band of rebels and conveyed to Richmond, where he was for some time confined in prison. He was finally taken further south to another prison, from which, in the summer of 1864, he escaped; and after spending some time in the mountains, during which he suffered many hardships, finally joined the Union forces in Tennessee.

He was a brave and competent officer. While on Hookers staff he was promoted to major. (Wood)
